And only a 43" drop. That's not bad. I loaded mine to a relatively light load with a 210 Barnes tipped and it put my elk down with one shot that was a little high. He got up, spun and dropped again. The . 338 WM is an oldy but a goody. It is almost as versatile as the . 30-06, but up a few notches in oomph.

I loaded my 338 with a Barnes X 200 grain @ 2950fps. I killed a bull in Wyoming with it and it performed very well.

Am going this year to Wyoming with a 300 Win Mag.

I had a custom . 338 Mauser/Douglas 29" barrel/Brown Kevlar stock rifle that gave 2900 fps with the 250 Hornady/75 gr Rel 22, seated to 3. 48" (slightly elongated throat to achieve this seating depth with . 060" to the rifling).

That 29" BBl

Was a big push for that extra omph... ... wow a 29" Barrel... ...

I wouldn't really call that super hot load--it's still a 250 grain bullet at 2700 fps at the muzzle. Obviously that load is no slouch, but almost certainly still within SAAMI pressure specs. At 500 yards the boattail design and sectional density of that bullet is helping things quite a bit. I didn't take the time to try to find out where they reveal what bullet manufacturer "A2" is, but I'd be curious about that.

The . 338 I load for is my dad's pre-64 model 70 Winchester, so I don't try to push things real hard with it. I guarantee you that that same bullet at 2500 fps muzzle velocity would do just dandy on whatever it hit. Besides, 500 yard shots up here in Alaska are few and far between--and honestly those types of shots are beyond most hunters abilities anyway.

I agree

The ballistics out at the end are spectacular for a 338 win mag... .

That's the aerodynamic superiority of a boat-tail bullet...

That particular bullet isn't the fastest out of the box but isn't losing speed as fast as the rest... less drag from the boat-tail rear end.
