How many miles on your fuel filter before a change?

Hi, I was wondering how many miles everybody is changing their fuel filters? I know a lot of it will depend on quality of fuel and location, however I would still like your opinions. I drive 300 miles a night (5-6 days a week) in my 93 and I also fill up at the same station. My truck is stock except a four inch exhaust and a afe filter. It averages between 20-22 mpg per tank with 265s:-laf. Should I be able go 20,000 miles or 4 months safely on a fuel filter? Or do I need to change it every other month? I only use fleetguard filters.

I replace mine at every oil change whether it needs or not, but in theory you could let it go until you noticed a drop in fuel pressure across the filter (thus indicating the filter is becoming clogged). If you monitor the fuel pressure after the filter and know what normal looks like, when you notice the pressure is down by a couple of pounds, it's definitely time to replace it.

I'm like JLandry, I change mine with every oil change. Because I don't have a fuel pressure gage I don't want to worry about the truck quitting while somewhere in the middle of nowhere. My usual service routine is to change oil, air filter, fuel filter and oil filter all at the same time.

Same here, about every 7500-10,000 miles on my rig. DW, please note you are in the first gen forum !

The owner's manual of the three Rams I've owned have all specified 15,000 mile fuel filter changes. That's the schedule I've always followed for 615,000 miles. I've used probably 98% Flying J fuel for more than eight years without ever having a bad experience with dirty fuel, failed injection pumps, or injectors, or other problems.

I was changing mine once per year, approx 20,000 miles. I never had any issues.

Once I let it go 2 years and it was not a problem.

Thanks for the replies. I go on average 8,000 miles or more a month. Because of the miles I change my oil every 5 weeks or so. That seems like a lot of fuel filter changes if I change it every time I change my oil. However, the truck runs great and I don't want to compromise the fuel system to save a few dollars.

I use the "in cab" fuel pressure gauge. When it begins to drop, I change it. The longer filters last longer, about two years running time. The short OEM unit about 5 to 6 thousand miles when I see a drop.



A "drop in pressure" is when I see a running prerssure of 12 to 10 from the normal 16 or 15
