Now that it has started getting colder in the mornings my truck kind of surges a little bit when I am accelerating (when I try to hold the throttle steady it does the same thing) it pretty much goes away after the truck warms up, I wish I could describe it better but thats the best I can do. I was thinking the APPS could be bad since it is the original one and the truck has over 300,000 miles on it now. Any ideas?

thanks,

Cory

My 98. 5 has had the apps replaced at 200,000k. It had flat spots in the pedal with some surging. You need a code reader or get them read. codes for apps are 0122 and 0121. there is a guy on here name Timbo who has developed a replacement for the main part without buying all the bracket etc. I paid 385. 00 from dealer before an alternative was available.

replacement

I thought I read that some of the ones that you buy you have to adjust them and some you don't, does the one from Timbo come pre-set? I don't mean to sound dumb but I don't know anything about this particular part.

I would just get a new one from Timbo. Timbo's needs to be adjusted but it is an easy job to do. A screwdriver and a voltmeter ia all you really need to make the adjusment. Mine runs like new.

What jeepit said. I got one from Timbo last month for 160. 00. Great part! It was EASY to install and comes with complete instructions. After reading that LONG thread about how the APPS was basically redesigned by fellow TDR members, I feel that the product that timbo sells is simpler in design and also should last longer than the factory one.

Cory i just put in one of Timbo's apps, takes about 1/2 hour, directions are good and it is a pud, you will need a meter, volt ohm and you can get a cheap one at harbor freight for under 5 bucks.

From the sound of your first post, i am not sure your apps is to blame. If your peddle goes dead, (you can pump it once to the floor and nothing happens, then the second push it takes off) That is what mine did for about 6 months before i changed it out.
Is the above how your truck acts, or does it just kinda have a slight miss or surge?
Dirk

mine has never been to the point where you can push it to the floor and nothing happens it just kind of surges a little bit, it acts like I am pushing the accelerator a little bit and and then letting off a little, but I'm actually holding it steady. And it really only does it when the truck is cold, it might do it a little when the truck is at full temp, but it's so slight that I can barely tell.

The apps is out of the picture when the cruise control is on and working.
Try setting the cruise and see if you still get the surge.
I would clean all the grounds and reset the apps, it may be a leaking injector. I would also try some fuel additives to improve lubrication and see what happens.

I'll check

If I get a chance I'l' check that today and see what happens, but if it was an injector I wouldn't think it would matter if it was cold or warmed up would it.

too warm

It didn't act up at all today, I think it's because it was warmer, this morning it was in the mid to upper 40's. I'll have to wait a few days until it is a little colder in the morning.

On '98. 5 through '01 models the APPS is still in play when the cruise is on because it is vacuum actuated. Only on '01. 5 and '02 models is the APPS out of the loop when cruise is engaged.

Godspeed,
Trent

That's weird, I drove the truck with a bad apps for 6 months and it Never dropped out when i was on cruise, and i drove it when ever possible on cruise so the truck would not cut out and set the cel, and not once did it do it on cruise, and it has never done it since i replaced the apps.

Dirk

I am having the same issue as cmills. I get a P0122 code but no cel. I have the DTT noise filter installed and I even did the suncoast wiring. Is this APS or Alternator? or both. It happens on cruise control as well. I have an early '01.

Also Timbo's site is Home

I checked and I can still tell that it is "surging" a little when the cruise is on. So, do you guys think it is the APPS?

Do you know of someone with a manual transmission truck and no symptoms that would let you swap their APPS into your truck for a run down the road?

Godspeed,
Trent
