From Victor, Id. to Jackson is about 18 miles. The grade is 10% and I don't remember how long it is. Will you be towing? There is no tractor trailer traffic allowed from Nov. 15 to April 1, so need to keep that in mind. Might want to go around on 26, especially if the weather is bad.

I started up that way going westbound a few years ago. I was pulling my 4k lb TT with my auto trans. I couldnt get going fast enough to get into lockup. My temp gauge was over to the hash mark. So, I turned around and went the other way.

Now, I did tell the guy at the campground in Victor about my experience. He said he goes up that hill all of the time pulling his 5'r. But, Im sure he must have a manual trans. He said his Dodge has no problems with the hill. But, he talks to Ford drivers all of the time that have real problems with that hill.

Furds have problems pulling anything even on flat ground! :-laf

Been over Teton Pass (SOLO!) countless times in the last 50 years, you should of seen it before they “modernized” it! In the 60’s friends of ours came to visit us driving an air cooled GM Covair. That car with 6 adults in it was so under powered and the pass was at that time so steep and some of the curves so slow that I would jump out and push to help it around the corner!

Anyway today, the steepest 10% part with some 20-25 mph curves is about 5 miles on either side (slightly shorter on the west side). I believe the DOT limits commercial vehicles to 60,000#.

If you are using your RV there is NO reason to drive the pass! Use highway #26 from Swan Valley to Alpine, WY, the Snake River road to Hoback Junction etc. as described in a post above. It is only about 25 miles longer. When driving the pass we will occasionally come up behind an RV that if the brakes aren’t smoking you sure can smell them.

If you are going to travel (solo) when the roads are snow/ice covered I prefer to use the pass, it is WELL plowed and sanded. The river road gets a lot of steam from the river and is sometimes VERY icy. Just my $. 02

FYI- Jackson’s Hole/Jackson Hole/Jackson: To the early (1830s) fur trappers a valley was a “hole” usually named in the possessive after the first trapper to discover it or to claim it as his own. So to be correct the valley is Jackson’s Hole, however most people today refer to it as Jackson Hole. The town is named Jackson.

When are you going there and how long will you be staying etc?
