Hi, Picked up a 98 Quad Cab short box 4x4 this evening. The truck used to have a NV4500, but some previous owner installed a six speed. :) Reverse is this trans is up and to the right. Is this a NV5600? I've got to change all the fluids and need to know what this 6 speed takes. This engine is dirty, lots of oil leaks to fix. John

That would be a nv5600, good trans. Is it the 12v or the 24v? I have the nv4500 and use the Amsoil in it. There are several brands that will work, just make sure you get the right one for your trans. The engines on these seems to like to leak. Most of the leaks arnt that hard to fix. Harvey

Pennzoil Synchromesh is supposedly the Mopar equivalent transmission oil. I used some Synchromesh, but mostly Amsoil MTF in my 03 NV5600. Seemed like it shifted slightly better with the Amsoil. No problems with the transmission and had over 530k miles on the truck when I sold it. I think Redline and Shaeffers also sell the correct transmission oil, but I have no experience with either. I got my last Pennzoil at a NAPA store.

Sounds like you found a jewel. Have always thought the NV5600 and 12-valve would be a very desirable combo.

Thanks for the information. There are a ton of threads on the nv5600. It seems that each transmission acts a bit differently depending on the oil. One thing that seems to help with the shifting is an addition of Mopar limited slip additive or so I have read. This is my second 12 valve, the other one is a 95. I'll see if I can modify my signature. Ya, I do know a 98 quad cab 12v is rare. Thanks.

John

Sweet truck. Sounds just like what mine will be in a couple of weeks. I'm also installing 2001 axles to better match the offset of my '06 wheels, get the better front brakes and rear discs. IMHO they never made a better truck than the 12V quad cabs. I love mine.

Thanks guys. The bombing fund is in the midst of taking a hit, again. I hope to give this truck some love (fixing) during the slower period between Christmas, New Year. Not going to run it much until I go completely thru it. I have fixed one KDP that fell out on my '95. I like rear drums as they seem to have longer life on gravel roads and I am rural. John

Bought my 98 12 valve Quad cab brand new, I still love the truck, it has about 98,000 on the clock, mostly towing, runs just great! although at -4 this am it groaned a little, cold here in the Silver State.
