I'm having mine replaced today at just over 102,000 miles. Also getting new tires, shocks, front u joints (after having already done the rear u joints), and front rotors (both cracked). Not looking forward to writing out the check :eek: :{

Is it Carli that makes a set that is supposed to be very heavy duty.

How do you test for bad ball joints?

I'm not a mechanic, but from what I know (and not in technical language lol) you have to have the front end of the truck off the ground a few inches, then with a crowbar or 2x4 lift up on the wheel from under it. If the wheel moves up and down, the ball joints probably need to be replaced. Once again, I'm sure another member can post more technical info, but that is how I know how to check.

You dont even need a crowbar. Weight off the wheel, grab the top and bottom and push in and out. Its easier to have someone else do it while you look at the ball joint. Somtimes theres movement in the joint that you can see but not feel in the tire.

Under load though that small movement translates into big issues.

Just did mine at 80k. Put in the Moog. Would have loved to do the Carli's but just didn't have the money and wasn't going to anytime soon. So the Moog's went in. The job went pretty good. Did it myself. Hubs didn't come out to bad by using the power steering method. Pulled the hubs and rotors as a unit since there was no way for me to get the rotors off without destroying them. Much easier to get them off once on the ground with a 4x4 and a sledge. Everything is nicely cleaned and anti-seized for the next go around. Also did the u-joints. Both sides were in very bad shape. While you are having the ball joints done, might as well do the u-joints while it is apart.

I was qouted a price of nearly 1400 to do all 4 ball joints !!!!:eek: WTF, don't look like anything special to me . Uppers are priced at 235 a piece ?? !! "greasable stock style " is what I was told. This is by a well known front end shop here in town. . Comments welcome... as usual !:)

Yes they are greasable. They make an adjustable upper that I do not recommend. They recently came out with a non-adjustable upper which is what I put in. These are slightly better than stock, but I have had them fail pretty fast on an 05 as well. Time will tell for the 06. Since I do my own labor, I can go through a few sets before reaching the price of the carli's without assessing a price for my time of course. If you pay someone to do the labor, then the carli's would nearly pay for themselves after the first replacement.

My original upper ball joints are shot at ~140k miles. I will replace them this Dec or Jan while I'm in there doing the hub assembly and axle u-joints.

I'm going with the Carli uppers and lowers, since I don't want to deal with the balljoints again and I'm keeping the truck forever. Cost would be insignificant vs. labor charges if you were paying the dealer to do this multiple time in a vehicle's lifetime due to cheap ball joints that don't last long. Part cost is about $250 each, which is 4-5x more expensive than most aftermarket ones, but bulletproof and greaseable.

I'm waiting for the Carli lowers to come out. I talked to them and they will have a upper/lower special when they come out. Was supposed to be by the end of Nov. , but not there yet. They update their website each Wednesday, if you want to jump right on them when they come out.

Can someone go over the power steering method to remove the hubs? I know I've read it on here but can't remember the details. Thanks.

Which recall is that ?

While I couldn't find anything about it on Dynatrac's website, it is my understanding from some other forums that Dynatrac had to recall a batch of them because the metal wasn't treated right or something compromised the strength of it. So, right now they seem to be on backorder, maybe catching up on the demand, I'm not sure. I just know my shop has had some on order for probably a month and hasn't seen them yet.

Spoke with Mike @Carli this AM. Said the new lowers "should" be out by mid month, next month. Pricing will be real close to what the uppers sell for. Might just wait and see if they come out and go with those since my truck isn't doing anything to get my attention ..... yet. :rolleyes:

They make an adjustable upper that I do not recommend.

I have a pair of these adjustable uppers that I'll sell for 50% of whatever Rock Auto lists, if anyone is interested. Nothing wrong with them, I simply don't need them.

Anyone know what the cost is for a complete set of upper/lower Carli joints?

Carli upper and lowers are both avaliable as of last week. They have a sepecial if you get the uppers and lowers at $800 for both sets. Plan to have the guys at Carli do the install this Thursday.
