Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 99 24v fuel filter issue

Looking for ideas. My fuel filter head started leaking fuel through the seal grommet for the fuel heater. Judging by the tempurature of the wires the heater shorted. origonal $200 filter head has been reengineered by Dodge so it is now $1200. I haven't had much luck in finding an aftermarket model that doesn't use the origonal head. Any Ideas? There doesn't seem to be a lot of inventory in the Pick and Pull world.

Where are you at ??? A company here in NC has some used filter housings that fit a 99, I saw them in a pile in their shop last monday. My 99 did the same thing about 3 weeks ago and I am going to put a FASS system on it next monday. He was going to put a DDRP and a used housing on mine but I was worried in would happen again and would have the cost all over again. The cost is about the same in the end and there won't be a chance for it to start leaking again plus you get a better filter.

Here's what I did Glacier Diesel Power - Product Detail. Not that my stock unit failed but because I installed a gear rotor pump along the frame and wanted a different filter system. Only negative is there's no heater, but for me in my location of the country it hasn't been a problem = going on 4 years now.

Way cheaper than a $1200 new from Dodge unit anyway - and makes it much, much easier to change the fuel filter = mount assy where you wish, spin off old - spin on new. My $0. 02.

I'm with Joe. No way I would give DC $1200 bucks for a filter housing. For that much cash you can buy the best filtration system on the market; pump, filter, lines, the works.

Call Richard at Glacier and tell him what you have in mind. You couldn't work with a better guy and he'll fix you right up.

I had the fuel leak on my '99. The solution to the leak cost me 46 cents. Remove the fuel canister head and replace the o-ring where the heater wires feed through the head. This is covered in TDR issue 64, page 29. I took mine to a Cummins shop and the guy at the counter got the #10 A/C o-ring and was able to stretch it over the electrical connector to put it in place, so he didn't have to cut the wires. He only charged me for the o-ring. As for the heater element, if you can get by without the heater don't plug it in. The other thing that I read was to remove the seal and tap and plug the opening. Mine had that problem a few years ago. I picked up a newer style filter setup (2000+) with the plumbing from a TDR member that had removed his. The canister and plumbing bolted right in, then I just had to find connectors for the WIF sensor and the heater, clipped off my old connectors spliced in the new ones, works great and didn't cost much. Can't beat the $. 46 fix, though.

My '99 just started leaking yesterday, right where the wires come out of the fuel filter housing.



I'm interested in the repair using a new o-ring, does anyone have a copy of the TDR article from Issue 64?

i have a fuel filter for a 99 dodge diesel, on mine the cannister cracked , the top part with the heater is still working fine , i cut the wires off to use on a 2000 fuel filter, and if you can use it. its your for only shipping . email me if you wantg it

Stref, thanks for the "Digital Magazine" info, it was a big help.



I ended up taking my truck to the local Cummins service center. They were able to set me up with a new fuel filter assembly. The total for parts was $241 for a 2000+ style fuel filter, they had to do a little fabrication with the fuel lines but it fits good.



The new style fuel filter is a Fleetguard FS19586 for $101.

I want to thank everyone for their help and suggestions. I ended up getting a filter head from highgear, thank you, and have it installed and leak free. Removing the filter head is almost easier than just taking off the canister to change the filter. Even with repriming the system I think I spilt less fuel and made a smaller mess. If anyone needs a filter head mine is available. the heater wires are cut short so that opening will have to be tapped and plugged unless you know where to get a new heater/sensor. My haynes manual gives instruction on replacing the heater and sensor so the parts were available once upon a time. Since I still have the stock lift pump and it was a filter head issue, none of the aftermarket products were appropriate. during the research, I realized that I have replaced the lift pump once and sounds like I should have converted to an in tank model at that time.
