A loving husband !!

With trepidation I'm revealing my handgun purchase. I got my Concealed Carry Permit about nine months back, mainly to be sure I'm legal when I carry a pistol in the truck. I've had no experience with large calibers so I didn't get one until I was pretty sure what I wanted.

My son is a 27 year veteran cop and carries a Glock . 45 and he showed me its simplicity of disassembly, etc. He likes it and likes the caliber. I read up on it and decided that might be what I want, although I wasn't sure if my old hand and wrist could stand the . 45.

Well, I went to a gun show last week and came home with a near new Glock 30, . 45 caliber. It has a laser sight (the one that fits within the frame of the pistol. $640. Did I get a decent deal?

I haven't fired it yet but my good neighbor offered to take me to the range for my initiation.

I don't have a Glock, but I might try one just to add to the collection. Short of cosmetics and feel, I've heard nothing but good about them.

45 is a good serious round. I also like the 40. I just picked up a Springfield 1911 in a 9mm, my first 9mm. It shoots very well with a soft recoil. My dad is thinking of a Glock in 9mm for that reason. Let me know how you like the Glock, or if 45 is a little much for you. It will help me steer my dad into something he's comfortable with.

Now clean it real good before you shoot it. Get some ammo and go have fun. If you think trucks are addictive wait till the firearm bug gets hold of you.

There is nothing like a 45. If my wife can shoot one anyone can:)
Start with some mild target loads and work up from there.

Just be aware you need to buy GAP 45 ammo Not reg 45 its a little bit sized differently
If any one cares I love my Taurus SS ultralight Judge shoots 410 shotgun and 45 long colt. I have all kinds of specialty ammo all lined up.

Is the Glock 30 a 45acp or 45gap? Very different cartridges.

I may be missing something but I didn't see a model number so the OP may have a glock in . 45 auto or . 45 GAP. Glock does offer guns in both calibers

I have several autos, but i still prefer the wheel guns. I shoot a Ruger Redhawk in . 44 Mag and like better it than any other handgun i own. Oh, and. 45's aren't that bad on recoil. I also shoot a 45-70 pistol, now we are talking recoil! Randy:eek:

Yep, Be careful to get the right ammo for the firearm. Discharging a . 45 GAP round in pistol chambered for . 45 ACP will mess up the firearm and quite possibly, your health record! These cartridges headspace on the mouth of the case. Length of the case is critical for safe and proper operation. Good to hear from ya, Gene! GregH

What is 45 gap, i have never heard of that before?

The . 45 GAP (Glock Automatic Pistol) round was developed, as I understand it, for two reasons. The 1st was that Glock had no proprietary cartridge. No . 223 Remington, no . 40 Smith & Wesson. Gaston Glock wanted that to stroke his ego (so it was told). The second, and more important reason, was to develop a cartridge that was ballistically equal to the . 45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) in a shorter cartridge. This allows a shorter grip front to back, thus making it easier for those with smaller hands to handle a full sized pistol with a major load.

It doesn't seem that the GAP really caught on, though some other manufacturers made guns for it. I don't think it is even as popular as the . 357 SIG, which, while a great round on paper, never really caught on either. Like so many other answers to questions that weren't really asked in the gun world, the GAP will fade out over the next few years. That's my prediction.

On edit: Another reason for the GAP is so that a . 45 caliber bullet can be fired from a 9mm/. 40S&W frame size. A . 45ACP needs a bigger frame. There is a lot of info out there on the GAP and there are more reasons for it, including a stronger case for unsupported chambers. Blah blah blah. Let's face it... it gives us all a reason to have another gun!Oo.

Why are you guys confusing him with chatter about . 45 GAP? The Glock 30 is . 45 ACP.

Gene, it sounds like you got a fair deal, and the Glocks are tanks as far as handguns. They're dead reliable and will perform for you when the chips are down. However, one thing you definitely want to do is to try it with various ammunition and make sure it doesn't jam. Some guns will just have a preference for some ammo (mainly it's the bullet profile, but there are other factors too). I'm sure your son will have suggestions for ammo. I like to carry the same ammo the local PD carries, whatever that may be, as long as my gun functions with it.

Good luck!
Mike

Hey Trawler, the lightest bullet i can shoot out of the 45-70 is a 300 grain. I have found some 500 grain solids at gun shows, but i am afraid if i bought them i would have to load and shoot them. I ain't sure i want that much punishment. Randy:eek:
