I have a 02 2500 QC short bed auto. Was wondering what you guys thouhgt would be good add one to put on. Only things done to the truck so far is it has a straight pipe and k&n airfilter. Not gonna sled pull or anything like that. I do have an 18 ft gooseneck livestock trailer and 20 ft bumper pull flatbed I pull regulerary. Any ideas would be great. Oo.

Gauges are a must, especially a fuel pressure gauge on a VP powered truck. An aftermarket lift pump would also be a good idea.
 
Before you will be able to add much hp, you will need to beef up the transmission at the very least. That is also the single most expensive thing to do... :{
 
A high amp alternator if you live in a cold state we live in south florida and I still may get one. I hate the grid heater cycleing on and off it pull the system down so much the fuel pressure dorps when it cycles.
 
Definitly upgrade your liftpump system and get a fuel pressure guage. The factory lift pump is one of, if not THE weakest link on these pickups. There are many options for that depending on what your goals are for HP and your price range. I would suggest an Air dog system or Fass system, but you dont have to go that extreme. You could go as simple as relocating the lp to the frame. That is better than nothing, but not a great solution. Make sure you get a fuel pressure guage. You want to be somewhere close to 15 psi at all times. From there you'll probably want to upgrade your transmission before you go too crazy with power upgrades. Then you open a whole can of worms and it is never ending!

The K&Ns pass a bunch of dirt. After 6 years with an AFE PG7, my turbo's compressor has about the same level of grime on it as it did with the K&N at a year.



Yeah they flow, but not because they're a better filter. For filtration quality, you can't beat the stock. And realistically you won't see a difference between the stock and aftermarket elements at stock power levels anyway.

I will have to cry BS on the whole power deal run one with a stock filter for a month then go to the K&N and tell me you don't notice any difference in response from you turbo or your engine and yes the K&N may pass a little dirt but depending on what you drive on if its highway or gravel you don't clean the damn things every service they are to run you 50k before needing cleaned i drive gravel roads all the time and clean mine every 20-25k oh and the do have that MILLION MILE WARRANTY so if anything happens they pay for it!!

In fact, I have run stock, a drop-in K&N, and a Stage 1 AFE airbox replacement. Never noticed a thing when I switched filters. Do you really think you could feel a couple HP (maybe) difference on a 7,000lbs truck anyway? Not a chance. Ever hear of the placebo effect? And you're really okay with dusting out your engine for a couple HP?



I can't, in good conscience, run an air filter that only catches around 80% of the dust going into my expensive engine. There are plenty of other choices out there that match the flow of a clean K&N, and can actually stop dirt.



And have you ever heard of anyone successfully collecting on that warranty?
 
I absolutely agree with the others on gauges and an aftermarket replacement for the stock lift pump. Either a FASS or an Airdog will put you light years ahead in fuel system reliability.

Then ditch the K&N, get an Edge EZ and an exhaust brake and you'll have a much better towing rig that won't put big stress on your transmission.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever heard of someone trying to collect, unsuccessfully, on the K&N warranty? I have the K&N but am in no way a loyal fan - it's just what I have... .

I do have a rancher friend that runs K&N on all his ranch trucks with a serious disdain for cleaning them (seriously gross - dirt caked in and on the filter) and he has put 100k's of miles on these trucks and not had a problem.

Not trying to join a side here, just would like some empirical evidence of these claims. (A link to past TDR would suffice for me. )

I should have made the point about the warranty from a different angle. How about this: these engines have proven themselves to last 1+ million miles. If you go to K&N and claim that your engine is worn out after 200k miles because of their filter, do you suppose they'll buy you a new engine? That's a good life for a normal engine, but would they accept that 200k is the mid design-life for ours? Their warranty does not say anything about covering wear, just damage. Is your dusted out (relatively) low-milage Cummins broke or just worn out? A one-million mile warranty is a huge liability for a company. Assume they've found a way around accelerated wear in the wording.



Geno's used to sell 'em, but stopped because of their lack of filtration capability. They cite the air filter test in issue 34, page 105, showing that they had "high-flow attributes, but compromised air filtration. " You can Google around and find similar results.

The fact that your friend doesn't clean his filters is a good thing, considering a dirty K&N filters the air substantially better than a clean one.

The darn thing can ruin your engine. Do you want to take that chance? Dodge and Cummins do not endorse the use of K&N filters.
 
Dang guys he was just wanting some help fixing up his rig. I agree that k&n needs to go but dont argue about it on his thread... If i were you i would upgrade the fuel system first as many have said then next the trans. If you call dave at goerend transmission he WILL help you and not sell you something that you do NOT need. I just bought one from him about a month ago and love it. I wish i bought the thing years ago. After you get that done and if you still want more power i would start a new thread stating what you have done and what you use the truck for and what you want it do drive like... .

Bosch 275 injectors are an economical bump in power. There are various fueling/timing boxes that will add good power, i have a Bully Dog. This combo makes very nice power for a truck that works for a living.
