Gary... I was pretty disappointed when DELO became the new DELO LE. I had finally came to a conclusion that CI-4 Plus DELO was truly the best choice of all oils considering the synthetic like protection and properties at a very conventional price. I would never buy another brand... then it changed. But truth be known... CJ-4 DELO is probably still superb in many respects for older engines as well as new.

I still have a half gallon of the old stuff I keep on the shelf just for old times sake... or for special occasions. :)

the choice of oil is totally up to you and we as a farm have ran chevron Delo 400 15-40 and have never had a problem in all vehicles the oil is changed at 3k and all equipment is serviced at 100-200 hours and have never had a problem we have ran our DT-466 diesels over 5,000 hours and are now just replacing bearings in the bottom end as recommended by the dealerships

According John Martins Tech. Topics articles in TDR, Amsoil skimps on
additives-the most important part of the oil, just like Exxon-Mobil.
But if paying $50 a quart makes you feel better, go for it.

Right. And, which one was in a league by itself??? As I said, it's not for everybody, but if you are the type that demands the best and don't mind a few bucks a quart higher price, there is but one choice. :D

The TDR has published a couple of articles now on million-mile trucks, and non of them used synthetic oil--they just did regular maintenance and didn't do stupid things like use crappy filters.

I can't recall off the top of my head, and a bunch of my old issues are in storage. Hopefully someone else can post something.

You could also do some Google searches, and I think somewhere here on the TDR site is an index to all the articles that includes which issue they appeared in.

Issue 40 page 90 shows a one million miler.

I have personally seen a couple of dozen Rams with over a million miles. All were used for RV delivery. All of the ones that I know of used dino oil. Highest mileage was 1. 34 million and still going strong. Some of the trucks looked pretty beat up, but others looked pretty nice.

One driver was all excited to see his truck odometer roll over, but had it stick at 999,999 miles. He had it replaced and then got out of the business. I think it was a '99 3500.

I personally have never used synthetic in my trucks, but I am sure it has its advantages.

Still using Delo CI4+ and will until I break in the engine. I have a couple of cases left and with 7500-10000 mile changes this should be in the next 2-3 years. By then there will be about 150000-175000miles on the old girl should be throughly broke in. :-laf

we use amsoil 15w40 in all of our trucks in conjunction with the amsoil filters

our trucks have from 50,000 - 240,000 miles

but we didnt switch to amsoil until 2004

prior to that we just used regular rotella t 15w40 and good filters at reg intervals

the reason that we switched to amsoil was we figured its 2 1/2 times the cost of a reg oil change but you can get at least 3 times the life of the oil plus less time under the truck changing it we would be $ ahead

schaeffer 9000 full syn for me oil samples show its good to 10k miles on one oil change and i picked a mile to a mile and half to the gallon. the engine is also quieter and runs smoother. been very happy with it.

Yep those wonderful digi-odometers don't know what to do next after 999999 :-laf Watching a digi odometer "roll over" isn't half as fun as with a real odometer :eek:

I like synthetic since my engine seems to like it, definitely quieter. And I believe in the better cold-flow properties and turbo protection during hot shutdowns.

The best choice for the 5. 9 Cummins is AMSOIL SAE 15W-40 Heavy-Duty Diesel and Marine Motor Oil . I change the filter every 5,000 miles and drain and refill with fresh oil one a year. I'll pull the valve cover off in 2022 for the 1st time, and there will be just a light coating of oil on the inside of the cover.

Engineered for pre-2007 diesel engines in on-road applications as well as all model year diesel engines in off-road applications. High 12 TBN controls acids from combustion blow-by and EGR. Additives control soot thickening, oxidation and wear. Extended drain capabilities reduce downtime and motor oil expenses.

AMSOIL Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel & Marine Motor Oil (AME) is a premium diesel oil providing excellent performance in all types of diesel engines where highly effective control of wear and deposits is vital. Built with heavy-duty dispersant/detergent additives, its 12 TBN chemistry neutralizes acids and controls soot thickening from EGR and blow-by to protect against corrosion, cylinder bore polishing (wear) and varnish/sludge deposits. AMSOIL 15W-40 Diesel Oil resists heat and breakdown better than conventional petroleum oils for long lasting performance and protection.

AMSOIL, the leader in automotive synthetic lubrication, produced the world’s first API qualified synthetic motor oil in 1972. Trust the extensive experience of AMSOIL The First in Synthetics ® to do the best job protecting your engine.

Extends Drain Intervals

AMSOIL Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel & Marine Motor Oil can extend drain intervals far beyond those recommended for conventional petroleum oils. Its unique synthetic formulation and long-drain additive system deliver maximum engine protection, cleanliness and performance over extended drain intervals, reducing vehicle maintenance and waste oil disposal costs.

Advanced Soot and Wear Control Formula

AMSOIL Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel & Marine Motor Oil is heavily fortified with detergent/dispersant additives and is naturally resistant to soot. It is designed to keep soot particles suspended independently and prevent them from attaching together to form larger, wear-causing particles. Viscosity increase is minimized and soot-related wear is controlled.

Maximizes Fuel Economy, Reduces Oil Consumption and Emissions

AMSOIL Diesel & Marine Motor Oil has lower volatility (evaporation) than con-ventional petroleum oils. Because less oil vapor passes into the combustion chamber, oil consumption and emissions are reduced. Lower volatility helps AMSOIL 15W-40 Diesel Oil retain its viscosity after high-temperature service for excellent fuel economy and continued dependable protection.

Excellent Cold Flow Properties

AMSOIL AME remains fluid down to -44°F. It eases cold-weather starting and provides vital start-up lubrication to prevent engine wear. AMSOIL Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel Oil outperforms conventional 15W-40 petroleum oils and greatly minimizes the impact of cold weather operation.

APPLICATIONS

AMSOIL Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel & Marine Motor Oil is engineered for use in a wide variety of light and heavyduty applications, including over-the-road trucks, off road construction, marine engines, farm equipment, mining, industrial (pumps & generators) and personal automotive or commercial transportation. It is excellent for use with low or high sulfur diesel fuels in standard, turbocharged or supercharged engines, including modern low emission diesels such as those equipped with EGR systems.

AMSOIL Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel & Marine Motor Oil is recommended for use in diesel engines and other applications requiring any of the listed worldwide specifications and gasoline engines requiring API SL, SJ, SH… or ACEA A3.

* API CI-4+, CF, CF-2, SL, SJ, SH

* ACEA A3/B3, E2, E3, E5, E7

* Global DHD-1

* JASO DH-1

* Mack EO-M+ EO-N Premium Plus '03

* DDC Power Guard 93K214

* Caterpillar ECF-1A, ECF-2

* Cummins CES 20071, 20072, 20076, 20077, 20078

* Volvo VDS-2, VDS-3

* MB 228. 3, 229. 1

* MAN 271/3275

* MTU Type 2

* Allison C-4

MIXING AMSOIL

AMSOIL AME is compatible with conventional and synthetic motor oils. Mixing AMSOIL motor oils with other oils, however, will shorten the oil life expectancy and reduce the performance benefits. AMSOIL does not support extended drain intervals where oils have been mixed.

Aftermarket oil additives are not recommended for use with AMSOIL motor oils.

SERVICE LIFE

AMSOIL Synthetic 15W-40 Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine Motor Oil (AME) is recommended for extended drain intervals in engines that are unmodified and in good operating condition.

Diesel Engine Service

* Three times (3X) OEM* recommendation, not to exceed 50,000 miles/600 hours or one year, whichever comes first. Drain intervals may be extended further with oil analysis.

In TDR issues 56-58 John Martin did blind tests on a variety of oils. As he pointed
out, especially for diesels, additives are what you want to look for. Base stocks,
either dino or synthetic, are just a commodity. Amsoil was only average. You
Amsoil fanatics have to ask yourself what you are paying for. Is it all the marketing
and pyramid scheme? The CI4+ oils came out on top. I believe the only one that
is easy to find is Valvoline Premium Blue Classic, and it's endorsed by Cummins.
The back issues of TDR are on this site in digital format, so you can decide for
yourself.

I read those TDR articles but wasn't convinced to give up the Amsoil, as there's a number of factors the articles didn't cover that relate to oil quality. There's no laboratory or real world testing, mainly a comparison of additives & TBN.

Base stocks do matter, only Amsoil and Mobil and maybe a couple others use the top-tier syn base stocks to build their oils on.

The nice thing about Amsoil is you can still get the old spec pre-2007 oil, still readily available http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/ame.aspx
