Hey everyone, I work at a dealership and I had a customer come in with transmission trouble, 05 3/4 with automatic, and when we pulled his transmission the tech showed me the transfer, the oil was burned and there was metal particles in it. The tech and myself have never seen a transfer go out like this. Any ideals on what would cause it.

Hmmmmm. How many miles?

I've been wondering if the 70mph vibrations would eventually cause a bearing failure somewhere... although it seemed to go away with the later trucks, the early 3rd gens sometimes had this vibration. My 04. 5 was plagued until about 65k when I installed dynatrac's hubs... I often wonder how long things would have lasted had I left it vibrate.

I've heard of two fragged tcases that had the 70 mph vibrations, and one of those broke the front of the tcase off.

Has the fluid been changed out frequently in the t-case? That will kill them fast. ATF doesn't wear well past a certain point.

Harley,

I had a t-case with the metallic flakes in it.

I had my front drive shaft out for a while. When I got the shaft back installed in 4wd there was a loud popping from the t-case when I turned. I had some one look at it and the front shaft was binding and popping in the case. I drained the fluid and it was black and very matallic.

If you are familiar with tight turn in 4wd the steering wheel should move back and forth moving around the steering knuckles. But in my case the steering wheel wouldn't move. The t-case was being the weak link

Every transfer case I've seen that was bad, was caused by low fluid level... in each cast the rear seal was dripping and over time the fluid went down and later took out a bearing which left the metal behind...

My friend found that the quick lube guy didn't know, or understand there was a second check plug thus the low fluid...

These are easy to rebuild and a complete kit is available to cover the complete transfer case...
