Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Synthetic oil

Any body had your dip stick vibrate out, up to a 1/2"?

My truck has done this twice. Maybe I didn't push it in all the way...

Never heard of that. Are the oil rings ok? Maybe they are not sealing and allowing it to pop out. The other thing to check is to make sure your blowbly hose isnt blocked. Crankcase pressure build up can cause the dipstick to pop out.

My engine oil dipstick is tight as can be and I have to give it a good tug to pull it out. Last month I did find the transmission oil dipstick out about an inch. First time that ever happened and I'm keeping my eye on it.

I have also had transmission stick move out an half inch. But a new hytec pan fixed that. I did check the blow by tube, it is still making a mess down there. You would think you would see oil at the dipstick handle if pressure was pushing it out.

JCyrbok,

I have, as far as gauges, the same setup as you do. My gauges are not really working up to snuff. Both EG Temp gauges went out within 4 months of each other. Both read max temps. The trans, rear diff read good. I trust them. But I don't know if its the voltage amplifiers or the probes on the EGT gaugues. SPA does not sell the 1/8 probes anymore. Yeah I can source them on the net, but I never did ask questions to SPA. Maybe I should. I also have the Dakota gauge also. Never has failed me yet.

I guess I stole my own thread for something else... oh well... its all good...

My gauages are going strong after like 8 years. I did have to replace my EGT Thermo about 3 years ago as it died out of the blue. They have a 1/4inch Thermo now that works. What I did was go to Eustis Pyrocom Home Page and they have a 1/8in NPT fitting that has will accept a 1/4in Thermo so I did not have to re-drill/tap my manifold. Took about 5 minutes to replace the Thermo. I have seen no difference in reaction time etc with the 1/4 vs the original 1/8in thermo.

Also I found that whenever the gauge acted screwy I would put some dielectric grease on the plugs and that fixed it. I have since done away with the plugs and hardwired all the connections and it has been rock solid since then.

Hope this helps with some ideas.

Since we're on the subject of dip sticks, I have a question. I bought my truck brand new in Sept of 01 (its and 02). Whenever I get the oil changed, there is always oil up may 1/2" or maybe even an inch up above the full line. (into the numbers on the dip stick). I've never questioned it. Is this a common reading for these trucks ? Or could it be that I have the wrong dip stick ? I think I did remember asking about that a few years ago, and they said it was right.
