... and check engine light is on. now ive searched this topic already and somewhere it was said that you can cross over wires to rid of the light. is this a simple solution to rid of the light?

When the EGR is on the ECM is looking for a 10* rise in intake air temp. I used a relay and used the EGR solenoid voltage to pick it up. Using a scanner I tried different resistance using pots to adj. Found about 8k set temp to around 75* and 6k about 65*. Disconnected the IAT and ran wires to resistors to the IAT pig tail. Used a Radio shack relay and by playing with the values I got rid of the check engine lite. Used NC connection for cooler temp and the contacts hot when picked up to get the 10* IAT temp rise.

The best way is to get A Federal, non egr ECM and swap yours out. I did this to get rid of the trans gov pressure code after getting DTT trans. Contrary to what has been said, you do not need to get the ECM reflashed. I did the swap and have had no issues or those Calif EGR or other codes.

Bump back up...

Does an ECM store mileage or anything else that is related to an individual truck?

Where does one get A Federal, non egr ECM?

I'm trying to solve my CA smog issues. The previous owner removed the EGR system and disabled the MIL "check engine light. " Now, my engine fails the CA smog check.

Swap of ECM doesn't change odometer reading. Got my Fed ECM through the TDR ads.

The Fed ECM might cause a failure using a scanner since it doesn't show the egr. Not sure but I used the relay and resistors for 3 yrs w/o a check engine.
