What kind of realistic mileage do you get from a 2wd or 4wd 04-05 quad cab short box daily driver. A gas chevy 5. 3 makes about 18 MPG. So which one as a daily driver?

Whichever one you want to drive more. Sorry, but this basically a wash as far as mileage goes between the two. Which one will be more fun for you to drive every day? Decide that and you've answered your own question.

Realistic mpg for a Chevy gasser will be much closer to 14-15 in mixed driving with a 20 potential on all highway trips empty if you watch your speed closely. I drove one for years and I have to keep track of fuel for work. You'll love it on the highway, but it really falls off around town.

My 2500's average about 17. 5 in mixed driving on summer fuel. I can squeek out just shy of 20 on the highway empty with the '07 G56. I've never been able to get much better than 19 with the '04. 5 auto.

Mileage is a wash, for a DD and not working it the gasser will be better. These diesels do NOT like being idled around and driven for economy. The gasser is much better suited to no load short runs.

You will be much farther ahead basing the decision on use rather than mileage in this case. If you want a diesel, specifically a Cummins, look for a 12V for a DD. Much better suited for that type of use.

I generally get 18 mixed driving around town in my long bed and I just got done with a trip and got 21+ traveling at a steady 70 mph.
