Wife and I looked at a big ALfa years ago to live in for a while, definitely would have worked the 93 W250 pretty good, but then again I wouldn't have been moving it much... Instead we moved out of southern California, and bought a house.....

I think it was 35' and 15000lb dry/18000 gvwr.....

obviously, not sure what this guys situation is, but i know there are people out there that opt for a gasser because a diesel "isn't worth the extra $xxxx". forget the obvious MPG's, i say how valuable is the ability to pass a, oh i dont know, a bicycle, while pulling that camper?

If he has an over underdrive in his truck he will get very good milage on it. My X son inlaw has one with the over underdrive that pulls a 40 foot work trailer that is loaded heavy. All so a 06 1ton diesel that pulls a 40 foot work trailer with his office in it it is a 6 speed the 99 1ton is a five speed that pulls a 36 foot trailer. There is very little different in the fuel milage.

I have to admit that it is not enough truck for that big camper. But, as an owner of a 96 V-10 Gasser, outside of not having enough brakes to slow anything near that size down, the power is there (at least on mine it is). You might as well open your wallet and pour the money out though, they are real hungry for gas when loaded heavy. I have hauled alot of heavy stuff with mine over the last 170,000 miles but this one is pushing the limit even for me. The gasser for me, when I purchased the 96, was the logical choice. The additional $6K for the Cummins and having turned a wrench in a truck shop all of my life, the wife did not want the smell or the noise anywhere around (I did not really either). I have had braking and front end issues with the truck until I repaired it after warranty tried. After 170,000 the radiator leaks some, the trans leaks a tad bit but it will still get with the program (and does regularly still). We just need to pour cash into the fuel tank when we do. No, the V-10 in the trucks does not require Premium fuel (It does, however like mid grade ALOT).

BHuebner,

If you saw that V10 Dodge with that size 5th wheel in Wyoming, Im sure he has experienced some Rocky Mountain passes and maybe has already decided to upgrade the truck or downgrade the 5er.

I dont know how garlics 400 hp gasser could possibly tow anywhere near the capacity of a n oil burner, at best, he's putting 420, 430 ft. lb torque on the ground, any "little" 5. 9 cummins can equal, (or double)this grunt with no stress at all on the engine, and you dont have to worry about pre ignition, or "spark knock" REAL TRUCKS DONT HAVE SPARK PLUGS. !!!!!!

This guy had Montana plates. hopefully he stuck to the interstate. he cant be getting but 5mpg plus the hitch weight alone has to be axle snapping. maybe the F550 was in the shop.

I never stated that mine was a rocket when I towed or it would out pull anything, Just mearly it would tow well. I have seriously overloaded it many times, not a great decision on my part usually. But the my Gasser would get with the program. Many trips up and down Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado passes towing trailers and hauling CO campers over the course of it's life had proved that it would do what I asked of it (Not much more though). The 6. 7 that I currently tow with has proven to be much better at doing that task then the V-10 ever did. But with a turbo the size of a small car you can do a whole lot of things at altitude (8,000 ft +) then an 8. 0 liter gasser could not do any way. Point taken, but the gasser is still fun to drive, no turbo lag and 4. 10 gears, thats why I still own and drive it. By the way I have never experienced a 'spark knock' with it (I think it is only 8. 2:1 CR), the oil stays clean for 3,000 miles, the engine runs quieter than the wifes 3. 0l Ranger. Yes, REAL trucks do not have spark plugs.

Well said Garlic. The V10 may be a gas hog, but it's a proven powerful and reliable real engine.

Had a buddy that did the Viper thing to his 96 2500. Did the cat back, headers and chip, used a lot of gas, sounded really funny but ran pretty good for a 7000# truck. Problem is my 6. 7 probably would smoke him, I know it will smoke a stock v10 truck and I get better town miles with my oil burner.

FPettijohn, my 6. 7 will definitely run circles around the V-10, with or with out a load. I only have exhaust and a few minor tweeks (No ECM programming) and an intact transmission (never been out of the truck, only services done). It has proven it will out pull the Ferd V-10 (6. 8l) It also sounds better with the Gibson too. The rule when you run gassers is there is no substitute for cubic inches. I have out hauled 502 Chebys that I built for towing. But alas, even an early first Gen will get me on the hills. I don't mind though, 'Cuz I got em now with the 6. 7l.

face it, everybody on this forum is a total fan of the oil burners or we would bedoing something else now, like putting dead dinosaurs in our quiet little "chick trucks",so there is little real debate as to which power plant will plow the field, and at what cost, so I still say REAL TRUCKS DONT HAVE SPARK PLUGS !!!! (I do have a reason to say this, my wifes "truck" is a F150 king ranch Roush equipped 5. 4) wont tow a loaded grocery cart downhill with a tailwind

i used to own a '97 v-10. did it has some power, yes. did it get 10mpg empty, yes. do i miss it, no. it was not by any means a bad truck, it was actually quite trouble free. but either way i was glad to be rid of it and into a ctd.

AWeiman; Thanks, my setiment exactly. The lighter side is, I have made a pretty good living off of the 'oil burners' in my 30+ years as a wrench and am glad I finally took the plunge to get my own. Some times we don't always do what is best for the future, sometimes it is what is convienent at the time. At $10. 00 per hour you can't always buy what you REALLY want but must settle for what you can afford. Anyway my 6. 7l has been trouble free for 45,000 miles, thank you very much.

I pulled an Alfa just like that with a 99 ctd 2500 with 3:54 rear. Two years later I bought an 06 3500 with 4:10. The 2500 did will but We never went over 400 miles from home, do to fear I presume. The pin weight is about 3000 lbs. and each of those three axeles has brakes.
