Here is a pic of my new 2010 3500 Mega Cab. Picked it up 2 weeks ago from Dave Smith Motors in Idaho. Dealt with Ed West. He knew his trucks and the pricing and service were better than I could have hoped. The accessories were all installed properly and Cooper, the manager, assisted in making the deal easy. If you are in the market for a new Dodge, call Ed @ 208 784-1208 x1488 and tell him I sent you and that you are from the TDR Group. I flew out west with my family and put 5000 trouble free miles on the truck getting back to NY via the southern USA. Saw a lot of country and couldn't be happier with the truck's performance.

What kind of savings did you get over your local dealers? Just curious! Numbers are a wonderful thing!

I keep looking at local ads and my oh my are these new trucks expensive. Last year you could find deals on a loaded Ram 4x4 Quad Cab for $37-39k. These days they are looking to be in the 48k range... .

the main reason i went with dave smith is that they knew the trucks. on long island, i couldn't find a knowledgeable dealer so i started looking on line. i found that ds had the largest supply and that they were willing to configure what i wanted. as far as the pricing goes, they come in WAY below list and a couple hundred below invoice. the local dealers were coming in 5% below window sticker which was really no deal at all. at DS they provide a free options allowance, apply all rebates (i got a commercial upfitters allowance) and i believe they provide some sort of fly in allowance. even before i considered picking it up the price plus 2k shipping was far better than a local deal. go to davesmith.net not .com and look at the inventory. pick a truck you like or close to it. call ed and he will shoot you a price in short order. its painless and it will give you the exact information you want.

I went to their section on the Chrysler / Dodge website. This is amazing -- It says they have around 300 Ram 2500's and 300 Ram 3500's... .

2500's at Dave Smith Motors located in Kellogg ID

3500's at Dave Smith Motors located in Kellogg ID

Could this be correct? No other dealer that I could see has more than 30 of either in stock...

Is Dave Smith acting as Chrysler's agent as a holding tank / repository? Something interesting is going on here. Chrysler has been preaching about how they want to keep inventories under control to maintain product values and be more efficient.

I wonder what the deal is?

Dsm

DSM has trucks parked in every available empty lot in town. They are the bread and butter of the community. 70%+ of their biz is out of state. They are also Hawaii's biggest dealer. I special ordered mine and it arrived in Kellogg in 29 days(11-'06). Due to a winter from hell up there,DSM set me up with another nearby customer and we had ours transported to Oceanside, Ca. We got a price break, but more importantly they used a polite, competent auto transporter guy. See if your local dealer can match them, but otherwise I'd go through them again.

dave smith is the real deal

go to davesmith.net and check their stock. call up ed west @ x1488 and he will give you pricing on any stock number from that list. i went there my self and saw acres of dodges and every unused parking space in Kellogg has a new vehicle in it. you can cut a sharp deal with them and sleep easy knowing that whatever they agree to will happen. i had a glitch with my purchase and ed, cooper and the owner went to bat with chrysler. they have the juice to get things done. if you can take a dave smith price to your local dealer, they will have a hard time matching it. i bought a FULLY loaded rig from DS. my local dealer was more even when I added the 2k shipping quote to NY from ID. It was a no brainer. i'll buy there again. mannyc

I'm sure -- That's not my question.

My question is -- Why does Chrysler Group LLC let them carry between 10x to 100x the inventory of trucks than any other dealer.

It's just interesting. Not good or bad -- just interesting.

I already got my new one last week so I'm good.

I'm sure they're great.

Because they move a heck of alot of vehicles. In 2006 when I bought mine they were selling one vehicle(GM and Chrysler products) every 17 minutes. They had over 60 salespersons employed. The more they sell, the better the wholesale price and holdbacks they get from the manufacturer's. I had my sprayed in liner and camper wiring done there as well as a tire upgrade. Everything was done right and for a reasonable cost. I just wish they'd open a store down here.

sales ability

i think the # of trucks ds gets is based on ability to move them. the 100s of trucks in stock do not stay on the ground for a long period of time compared to the local dealers around here who suck on the few vehicles they have on the floor. chrysler must recognize that ds is the 800 lb gorilla and treats them accordingly. story goes that ds approached ford for a franchise many moons ago. ford insisted on having a ford factory presence on site. ds refused. supposedly ford has been back and ds is not interested. ds in house buyers place regular large orders on spec which im sure helps keep the truck plants humming.

i dont give chrysler mgmt much credit & assuming they have a plan beyond survival is generous.

Manny, did you try Riverhead Dodge ? Just curious as I'm getting ready to start the hunt. Here on LI, I suspect getting a service appointment would be difficult when buying from out of state. Did you buy it from us ? What is your VIN# ? Hold on please... . Yes, Mr. XXX, I can get you in on... . Let me know where/how you are treated for warranty work. Thanks.

I did not try Riverhead as I am in Huntington. Too far away to take it there for service. If you are specific about what you want, you will either have to get lucky and find it on Long Island or order it. With several hundred trucks in stock at DS you will likely find what you need. I just had my first oil change done at the old Lee dodge that is now Huntington Dodge. I called, they said you can come in and wait while they did the oil change. I believe they were happy to see me and my money. I'm sure Chrysler would be interested in hearing about any dealer that won't service your truck.

If you are concerned, visit the service manager at the dealer you will be bringing the truck. Tell him you HAVE A 2010 Ram and would like to bring it in for service. I guarantee you will not get any static. Its tough times for car dealers, you are in the driver seat.

Do yourself a favor. Visit a local dealer. Find a truck on the ground or have them build 'your' truck. Get bottom line dollar price including incentives. Call Ed West at Dave Smith. Don't tell him your dealer's price. Have him work out the options, etc and get a price from him including shipping. It will be way lower than what you get on Long Island. Period. Feeling adventurous? Pick it up and drive it home! It is a great trip.

I talked to a sales Geek at our local Dodge dealer. He started telling me about the Heavy Duty Dodge 3500's all equipped with the BIG V-8 engine!! I just about peed myself.

Smith DOES know trucks, and wont direct you wrong. BUT If your local dealer can handle your needs I would suggest shopping there first. IF
