I have a 2006 Dodge ram 3500 with a 48re. When the truck was almost new I was going up a hill with a load of lumber on a 30 foot gooseneck trailer the transmission over heated. Now every time I haul something with a little weight it over heats the transmission. The motor will rev up but the truck just want go. When the truck is not hooked to anything it seems fine. The truck has 67000 miles on it. Any ideas on what could be causing this and what is the best fix.

I have been looking at Goerend. Is a torque converter and valve body all I need?

A TC and shift kit will probably fix the obvious issues. Its the other pieces that potentially got hurt whne it over heated that will bite you down the road.

At the very least, you need to pull the direct and forward clutch packs and rebuild them. That will probably address all the pieces that could have been hurt. The rear band and OD clutches are the only things left that could be hurt but unless you are seeing issues with reverse engaging or OD dropping in and out they are probably still OK.

If you tow a lot, do yourself a favor and replace the front band with a better rigid band. This will help considerably with weight and power transfer when starting a load rolling.

If you do just the front part of the trans with a decent TC, billet servo and accumulator, billet band strut and anchor, plus a better front band you should be able to get the parts and get it installed for around $2k if you have a shop that will be reasonable and do the work.

A lot of shops won't touch it unless they do a total rebuild for warranty purposes. A full trans may be the better route if you can swing it. Goerend, DTT, HTS are all a good choice and should be able to do something for the $3k number that will be considerably better than stock.

I am getting Black diesel performance in Adairsville Ga to price the stuff I would need to a rebuild with Goerend parts. Has anyone did any dealings there?

If you are still pulling heavy loads consider the labor cost to remove and reinstall the transmission in the truck and the labor to disassemble, repair, and reassemble the transmission.

Sometimes it is better to bite the bullet and have a full performance rebuild done while you are into the job the first time. If you only partially rebuild it and another problem shows up in a few months you will regret the money you saved.

Your money, your decision, of course but I have usually regretted the times I did a job "on the cheap. "

Haven't heard anything good or bad about them. If you want a competing quote, check with Garmons Diesel in Griffin. They build everything in house including the TC and they are local to you. Easier to go back to if you have issues.

Are you located close to Chattanooga or Forest Park?

Truer words were never spoken! Good advice right there.
