This is disturbing.....

My son is a gearhead in Reno, Nv. and has been hearing rumors that there are those in Ca. gov't. who are proposing that all CTD's here be retro-fitted with the urea injection system now used by GM & Ford. He has friends there that are "gearing up" to install these systems for Californians, and they are estimating the install costs to be in the neighborhood of $7K. I have an '06 2500 4x4 with only 57K miles---and it's paid for. Does anyone out there have any "sources" that can either verify or dispell these rumors? Thanx

Sorry, but I am smelling BS on that one. If the vehicle is already C. A. R. B. legal off the line for a specific year, how can they force people to add on something "above and beyond" their own laws? Oh wait, we are talking about CA here.

Ca has had retrofit programs in the past on Gassers,It did not last long,a few engine failures and the program was scrapped. There was a big rig retrofit fit program that drove many trucking companies into BK. It is my understanding that that program has been halted due to the economic hardships it caused albeit too late for many. I don't see a urea retro program happening in the near future.

CA is now doing a retrofit on large diesel engines used off road, and on road... . if you own a large engine used in a Grader, Trac Hoe, CAT, etc, your going to have to either get rid of it or retrofit it... most are seeing something in the neighborhood of 10K-14K and it uses a DPF that can be removed and cleaned... "Donaldson" has such a kit... the soot is collected by the DPF and the nox is lowered by Urea system... .

They might move on the smaller trucks, but I'm guessing that they have their hands full over the next few years dealing with the off road stuff that makes a huge amount of bad stuff for the air. . based on their studies...

You also understand that they are after Cat converters on lawn mowers... . and have in some area's trade in allowances for electric mowers.....

EDIT -- BTW - I forgot to add, I attended a class on this from Donaldson when they thought our state was going to follow CA rules and impose the same rules... it was only for vehicles that did NOT meet the 2007 or was it the 2008 standards, they said nothing about these light trucks... they were after the units that burn that diesel without any emission gear to date...

Check with CALTRANS and make sure there are still highways leading out of Commiefornia. If the wackos in Sacramento haven't closed the highways to end vehicle pollution that's your chance to escape . . . before they do.

We are on the cutting edge here in Cali and just trying to set the standard in America for the 49 ignorant states:-laf

Easy now I live in Sacramento and my house is about two miles fromt the capitol building. :-laf However, I am not a wacko. :D

I smell a big BS on this urea retrofit as well. They can't possibly force us to pay over $7K just to satisfy the Liberals.

Where would we run to ? Deffently not Texasss to many steer's and Queer's JMO

the only thing big in texas is there Mouth's

Yeah I know, the best thing about Ca. would be away from it. However, I worked many years for the state and my insurance coverage DROPS BY50% if I move to another state. Just one of those little things they didn't mention. Go figure!

Thanks, everyone, for the replys---I appreciate them and the info is encouraging. This '06 is my 4th CTD and I'm hoping it will last thru my retirement. (so is my wife)

I don't know if you know this... but the largest amount of insurance fraud comes from CA and you also have all those guys from across the border without insurance or for that matter maybe even a valid license... . I'm sure that's why you have those high rates...

Oh yeah, I'm aware all right! And not long ago, our state insurance commish. decided that it was only right that we, as residents up in the far northeastern corner of the state pay the same exact rates as L. A. residents. We live out in the dingweeds and see probably 6 vehicles a day go past our property. Yup, that sounds fair to me?

Welcome to The Golden Fleece (I mean state).....

You are just the kind of guy California needs. You are probably a supporter of CA politics and policies.

I agree with you. You should stay in CA. Nobody invited you to Texas. You wouldn't fit in here.

No, I wouldn't fit in Texas---don't have boots tall enough. Know what I mean, Vern?

All I need is a good running Dodge Cummins to pull the travel trailer up the Alcan next month. Three tours in Vietnam left me with a little dioxin issue as it is, so I really don't want to be injecting any Texas into a perfectly good running truck. thank you... ...

I agree with Bob the truck I drive at work is the oldest in the fleet ( 1997 ) they thought that they were going to have to get rid of it and buy another high horse power for the stations in Big Bear but the reason given by Bob has saved the old girl for awhile longer. :)

where are they all going

Wife works for the school dist. More and more kids are leaving our commie state for sure and they cant go west and they have to go at least past AZ. Most are running so hard that NM is just a slow down point and the big stop on the list for where are your records going TEXAS good luck hope you can stop the wave at the border (and thats not TACO BELL):-laf

'ppreciate the input BigNasty. That's one of the real benefits of living in the "Golden Fleece", ya never know what these idiots are going to dream up next --- or when. Whatever it is, you can be sure some politico will have an angle that will indirectly assist his (or her) net worth. I'm pretty happy with this '06 truck and right now don't have any plans to modify with electronics. I did go with a Magnaflo muffler and plumbed in a huge Fram air filter. Had to eliminate the factory air box that inhaled the slightly cooler air, but that didn't seem to bother it a bit. Plumbed the air flow sensor into the 4" thin wall pvc that comes from that big Fram CA 8037 and the computer still likes it just fine. I built brackets & installed a fat rear sway bar and re-adapted the air bags off my old '99truck. That combo helps to calm down the rock'n'roll when I pack the Lance camper. I did both those plus installed the high dollar Bilstein shocks on the '99 on all 4 corners and have come to the conclusion that anything short of big rig shocks isn't going to stop ALL of the sway. Last spring we traded the 30' 5er for a 25' bumper pull---way less wind resistance and about 2200# less weight. I still don't get the mileage with this truck that I did with the '99 though. and it has less grunt. I have a pal who does performance diesels, and he made the old truck perform: modified the turbo, used larger Cummins injectors and a little Edge programmer. The dyno at the college said 353hp to the wheels & 660 pounds of torque. We pulled the 5er to Death Valley at about 62mph and got over 15 with that truck. The '06 only got 12. 4 with the lighter trailer on a recent Colorado trip, but that WAS over the hills on hiway 50, including Monarch Pass at over 11K in the clouds. I've got the dealer installed Jacobs brake which works OK, but not as well as the PacBrake on the '99---not as much braking power. I really do like the extra gear the G56 provides and there's a lot more interior space when we take another couple. I'm still hoping that the truck will loosen up more after I have 70-75K on the clock, as have the 3 previous CTD's. Thanks again for the input.

Hey listen.....

Enough Cali bashing already. I lived in NW Washington St for 18 months (work related) There's more flamming liberals there per square mile than cal:eek:, dont kid yourself. Oregon is just as loaded with them as Wa.

You are absolutely correct. Well I believe the entire Pacific cost worship NObama as their new found god. I am a spoon fed catholic, served 22 1/2 years in the US military and a lifetime NRA member. Can you guess who's side I am on?

This whole thing about smoging diesel is just another way of the "big government liberals" milking its citizens to death. #@$%! Next year I will have to smog my truck and my Beetle TDI for the first time.
