I understand how threads like this start turning political, but choosing a team (political party) is not going to help this country do anything but divide even more. Californians are tired of pollution and perceived wars over oil. Most of this particular issue is due to having a LARGE amount of people in one area - something Texas obviously has not had to wrestle with much outside of Austin.

I'm tired of BOTH sides playing this game while nothing constructive happens. Both parties have people trying to get reelected with an agenda - it is a fact. I have been on both sides of the fence and neither has everything figured out. What I do know is most anyone completely devoted to one persuasion is usually the most wrong. Blind faith is just that.

Rant off.

Tenn.

Hey listen.....

Enough Cali bashing already. I lived in NW Washington St for 18 months (work related) There's more flamming liberals there per square mile than cal:eek:, dont kid yourself. Oregon is just as loaded with them as Wa.

While on Vacation at the inlaws in Mount Vernon Wa I saw way mor Obama signs than McCain. They think Obama is God:rolleyes:.

Mac:cool:

Just got back from Tenn. (went to help with the local flooding) we drove around Nashville and pumped out fuel tanks so other trucks could put in some good fuel. The thing that was a HUGE surprise was that the local folks DIDNT CARE ONE BIT that my partner and I were from Commiecal. They were just happy to be able to get around. As for me Im just glad that I live in a country that allows us to be able to think that one state is better or worse than another. Been around the world and there are very few other places that I would want to call home even if it was Texas or Commiecal. JMO;)

Just to address your points JTucholke, I have lived in CA all my 49-1/2 years of life. The worst part of CA, highest smog levels, is the Inland Empire area, due to the geography of the mountains all around that area. The off shore winds from the Pacific Ocean blow over LA and Orange counties, that was good for them but that smog ended up in the Inland Empire. So we got a triple whammy of pollution.

Back in the 60's and 70's the air in LA, Orange and IE, you could cut it with a knife, very brown sky's, could not see down the street, lungs and eyes would burn badly.

Nixon started the Federal Clean Air Standards in the mid 60's. In the mid 70's the refineries had to stop adding lead to the fuels. In the 70's CA went above and beyond the Federal standards, and demanded auto mfg's, factories, oil refiners to comply with much stricter standards. So that started the one state CA only cars, less power, less mpg, more money. CA also drove out soooo many businesses like plating shops, paint shops, steel industries, on and on for decades.

We used to have warning called the "Smog Alert", and it was rated stage1, stage2, stage3. A stage1 was very common unless the Santa Ana winds were blowing or it was raining. We would get a couple dozen stage2 alerts, which were very bad on the lungs. Even had a few stage3 alerts, they demanded to stay indoors. By the late 80's the after all the stringent measures, driving out business, people moving out of CA and going to NV, OR, WA the air was improving drastically. No more stage3 alerts, and only a few stage2 alerts, but still had stage1 alerts. Then I think it was the late 80's AQMD / CA / politicians lowered the bar on when to call a smog alert. So they ruled to lower number to start the alerts. So now a stage2 would be like a stage1 back in the early days. One might ask why would they do that, to justify their job security. There were very few smog alerts and they wanted to get them back into play. Well now into the 90's technologies were coming into play with autos, factories and the air just kept getting cleaner. So back in the 90's only stage1 alerts were the norm, and only a few. By the 00's, we do not get ANY smog alerts, NONE, air is just too clean. But you hear and read about the children, the old, suffering, crap. It is all coming from anti-pollution Nazi control freaks running CA. It is Big-Enviro and the puppets are the Dem's passing the laws in CA. You want to see and feel smog, take a trip to China or Mexico, not CA

There is a balance between wacko and reality, and that pendulum went full off the chart about a decade ago in CA. Now they are going after lawnmowers, fireplaces, and many other things to list.

OK, now to give my opinion on this subject, getting the lead out of gasoline was a good thing. Technologies caught up and gave us power with out the smog. I don't think getting the sulfur out of the diesel was a good thing overall because of the loss of fuel mileage. Just think about all that extra crude oil pumped and diesel used to have ULSD so we can clean up from a 95% standard to a 99% standard. The Ethanol fiasco is one big cluster$uck, using and growing corn to make a weak fuel to blend it to gasoline to further dilute it, much less MPG, more crude oil pumped, more fuel consumed.

Yes, CA had to get the air quality handled, but govt. is a racket, control is power, scare the people for votes, big money, big spending, and we are now Billions in debt, soon to file bankruptcy. More money wasted at the peoples expense.

This issue is my pet peeve because all of the misinformation because of greed, power, control, Socialism.

I had to vent.

I go back a few more years. I'm 60 and remember growing up in San Diego and you could see the brown stuff heading down from LA. We would get out of the water in the 60's after surfing for hrs. and cough and cough. Those days are over thanks to emission controls and unleaded gasoline. The diesel smogging is here to stay. My only hope is that it becomes standarized and fair. I just don't see many light truck diesels smoking around here.

An excellent informed post. Well stated and well explained. I enthusiastically agree.

The point about going from 95 to 99% clean is very salient, a lot of cost for very little benefit. Seems to be a trademark of government for the last thirty years, along with the War on Drugs, Crime, Terror and Cancer. What may have been a worthwhile endeavor at the time has become a self-perpetuating enterprise- at our expense. Could probably include the War on Stupidity (Dept. of Education) in this endeavor also.

I think CA made this irrefutable when they started to talk about banning black cars because they cause people to crank the A/C.

My point pertains to the belief that one political party is superior to the other in every way.

Instead of playing teams, we should be looking for whatever sanity is in either party regardless of political affiliation. Unfortunately politics and the polar media outlets quickly turn into a football game of us versus them.

This is OUR country, not a game between two rivals.

You understand and lived through it too. But SD is close to the Pacific ocean and did not have the same magnitude of problems compared to the IE.

EXACTLY ! Govt. goes overboard, can't stop when the goals are meat, they just keep lowering the goals, more power, more money, more control.

The people have to put a stop to this madness.

You understand too !

I am as Conservative as one can get, but I would not want to have a JUST one Conservative party running things. Because absolute power corrupts absolutely. Even though I would agree in the beginning, it would devolve, just like CA has done, one party rule the last two decades.

"My point pertains to the belief that one political party is superior to the other in every way. "

It is not the superiority of the party, it is the bulk of the ideas within that party. Both parties have there faults, worms, scumbags, it is the ideas that the people need to focus on like a laser beam, not the party per say.

The ideas to protect, defend our citizens from enemy's, foreign and domestic. To keep a one official language, control the boarders, teach American history truthfully back to the founding fathers. America is the greatest country on Earth, teach it, love it, learn it.

This 1960's crap of if it feels good do it cannot be a standard.

My own opinion, I think we should have three official parties, one Conservative, one Independent, one Liberal. Get rid of the Dem, Rep two party lock. It only makes sense, there are those on the right, on the left and the people in the middle who go both ways at times. The party who promotes the best ideas for the country is what we need to focus on.

Put our house in order fiscally, only spend what we can earn as a country, depend on ourselves, not on outside influences, our people first, our country first. Control legal immigration to how it was back in the day like Ellis Island, not any third world person without any skills, or disease like we have now. And line jumpers: illegals, stop them at the boarder.

Wow! And all I wanted was info on rumors of Ca. (aka the Golden Fleece) requiring retro-fit of urea exhaust injection... ... ... ... ... ... .

Somewhere along the way we got political, as is the typical Ca. way.

Got the official notice of recall on the '06 Ca. smog issue. Took it to Lithia in Klamath Falls for an inspection & it's all good---as is. But it does require an additional inspection verification paper the next time the license is due. Takes about 45 mins for the inspection..... long enough to scope out those shiny new 2010's. Yup, Lithia was hopeful and the wife was NERVOUS! Skip
