I was talking to a Diesel parts place and going over some exhaust ideas as I want to increase my flow but the wife has limits to the increase of noise. Since we do a lot of family trips pulling the 29ft travel trailer, I have to keep her happy :)

They suggested putting on a AeroTurbine muffler where the CAT is and then a MBRP high flow oem replacement muffler.

In theory this sounds like it would help the flow and keep noise down.

My two questions are:

1. Would having a muffler that close to the turbo cause an issue? back pressure, EGT to high yet at that point

2. Would the muffler counter each other at all? noise, flow or whatever

Why pull the cat? I've heard the cat only causes restriction after 500-600 hp. Since the truck gets a lot louder with the cat off, I would suggest keeping it, and just installing a quiet, full size muffler. If that isn't enough, there was a post about a resonator that definitely cuts sound, and that could be installed in front of the muffler. . I like my stuff to be quiet, and I went to our local big rig store and bought a 32" muffler to replace the 12" long muffler I had and it cut the sound by 20% maybe. Just a thought.

I have the MBRP cool duals cat-back system and it sounds great with no drone. Like previously stated the removal of the cat will yield minimal results other than additional noise and potential drone issues.

Keep the CAT, remove the stock muffler, add a high flow muffler without baffles, run the outlet back to the stock bumper location.

Turbo Bob, I notice you use the TAG. (turbo air guide). Is yours by the turbo, in the exhaust, or both and how do you like it?

Yes, it is right before the compressor air inlet. It is the greatest thing one can add to help out MPG that does not cost an arm and leg.
I have the old version, single unit. They have a dual unit now which looks to be even a better idea, called the TAG III. Base SKU DPPOT310 Price: $129. 00

My mileage went UP nearly 2 mpg when I removed the cat. According to whom does the truck get louder with the cat removed? I didn't notice it a bit and my hearing is fully functional. Was a resonator also involved?

The resonator section of my exhaust came loose after a back country road trip this past weekend. My mileage has once again gone up since, so I'll be experimenting with a muffler only exhaust to verify.
