I have a 2006, 3500 2WD dually with Auto Trans and about 60K miles. When I first take off and just before the truck stops there is a light clunk or thump. I notice it mostly during light starts. I don't think It does it if I accelerate hard. Would this likely be my u-joints? If so, how do you check this?

i cant think of the name of it to save my life "carrier bearing?" but in the middle of your rear driveline it hold the driveline and mounts to the chassis with two bolts. Anyway the inner part it rubber an wears out then the driveline will clunk or vibrate mainly noticeable on take off.

Carrier bearing is right or sometimes they are called "center support bearing". Most likely a u-joint, however they usually don't clunk when you stop unless you slip it into reverse. Most times if they get bad enough to clunk they will also "ring" the drive shaft some. If it is loose enough to clunk you should be able to feel the slack by twisting the drive shaft by hand. Also look for metal dust on the cap seals.

Well, I got underneath and looked and shooked, tried twisting the shafts. Every thing looks and feels ok.

That is one massive driveshaft assembly! Personally I doubt I did any good.

Wouldn't the drive wheels have to be off the ground to allow turning everything to see if there was any play?
