I hit 30,000 mi on my '07, 5. 9 and thought that it was time to change the trans oil. With the Southbend clutch, the trans was noticiably noisier. I have felt all along that the ATF was too light a lubricant to use... . especially with power mods and towing.
YES... I know that it was designed for it! :-{}
I read here that Standard Transmission in Texas recommended using synchromesh oil in any rebuild they did on the G56 trans.
I called them and I talked to a gentleman for a few minutes about the G56 trans and any short falls. He said that they hadn't seen an abundance of them but there was a certain bearing in them that always showed lubrication starvation. I don't remember which bearing He said it was.
Anyhow... . I drained the ATF out of my trans,( Filtered it and poured all of it into the fueltank of my old 240D Mercedes) pulled the shifter out and poured in 7 quarts of Amsoil Synchromesh oil.
I did this last week and wanted to put some miles on before I reported on what I did.
COLD: Easier getting into gear, shifting into third when cold USED to be real hard and notchy. Not any more!
WARM: Trans shifts smoother than it ever has! It is MUCH quieter even with the Southbend clutch. Gear rattle is to a minimum if the trans is shifted to a higher gear at low RPMs.
HOT:Same results as WARM.
I think... . IMHO... . That this is the way to go.
