I hit 30,000 mi on my '07, 5. 9 and thought that it was time to change the trans oil. With the Southbend clutch, the trans was noticiably noisier. I have felt all along that the ATF was too light a lubricant to use... . especially with power mods and towing.

YES... I know that it was designed for it! :-{}

I read here that Standard Transmission in Texas recommended using synchromesh oil in any rebuild they did on the G56 trans.
I called them and I talked to a gentleman for a few minutes about the G56 trans and any short falls. He said that they hadn't seen an abundance of them but there was a certain bearing in them that always showed lubrication starvation. I don't remember which bearing He said it was.

Anyhow... . I drained the ATF out of my trans,( Filtered it and poured all of it into the fueltank of my old 240D Mercedes) pulled the shifter out and poured in 7 quarts of Amsoil Synchromesh oil.

I did this last week and wanted to put some miles on before I reported on what I did.

COLD: Easier getting into gear, shifting into third when cold USED to be real hard and notchy. Not any more!

WARM: Trans shifts smoother than it ever has! It is MUCH quieter even with the Southbend clutch. Gear rattle is to a minimum if the trans is shifted to a higher gear at low RPMs.

HOT:Same results as WARM.

I think... . IMHO... . That this is the way to go.

Glad the Amsoil Synchromesh is working out for you. It is a really good product. Keep us posted as to how it performs for you as you put more miles on it.

Thanks!

ENafziger, How do you like the "take off" engagement of the 3250 DD?<!-- google_ad_section_end --> <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

I really like it. It is smooth in 98% of the situations you normally get into. There were a few occasions when trying to back a trailer slowly, or backing up a steep hill that I had to intentionally slip the clutch slightly to keep the truck from bucking. However, now that I installed the Dynatrac manual locking hub kit, I just put it in 2wd low range, and it is perfect!

I've had the 3250 in for about 40,000 miles now. I sled pulled once with it at about the 600 hp level and held 4,000 rpm all the way down the track... the clutch hooked great and never missed a beat! I've pulled loads as heavy as 28,000 GVWR, and last weekend pulled a 31' travel trailer, and the clutch just keeps getting smoother.

Very intresting I had tried to use the Amsoil auto transmission fluid, in my 05 with the G56 gears, that they (AMSOIL) say was the same as +4 and the transmission shifted very hard as if the fluid was too thin and the syncros were not working at all. I switched back to MoPAR +4 and things went back to normal... good ot great, SO... ... if this stuff is better... ... . Guesss I'll have to try it.

You may also want to consider Synthetic Manual Transmission and Transaxle

Gear Lube 75W-90 API GL-4 (MTG). It's designed for high horsepower and high torque applications, especially if your towing quite a bit.

Has anyone changed out there transfer case oil to the Synchromesh etc. as well or are you all still running the ATF+4. I currently run the Amsoil ATF+4 in both the transmission and transfer case but I am always looking for improvements to make this awsome truck last longer. Thanks for all the great info. on this site.

Just as a reminder, if you are using ANY of the Amsoil Products in the G-56, NV-5600 or NV4500, that are not called out in the recommendations, then have a problem, Amsoil will not stand behind it. In my opinion, I would only use what is called out regarding the Viscosity of the fluids used for that particular application.

Motorhead do you have a good number for Standard Transmission in TX. I would like to call them and talk about the G56. Thanks

I was told by another member that using Synchromesh oil in my transfer case might not be the best idea. He said that the transfer has a small oil pump in it and the synchromesh might be too heavy for it when cold.
Ask Standard about this and report back to us.

PS, STILL enjoying better shifting in my trans with the Synchromesh oil in it.

I ran RP synchromax in my transfercase for better than 150k, and recently changed to Red Line MTL to match what I run in my NV5600. It seems to work very good.

Just talked to Standard Transmission and he said that there is a small displacment pump in the transfer case and that any other oil besides the ATF+4 might be to thick. So I guess that I am staying with ATF+4 in the transfer case.
