I have been using them for over a year now. They are definitely a partial solution to the terrible forward lighting on our trucks. They are also the only upgarded bulb that Daniel Stern Lighting recommends. He feels that they are actually an improved filament design rather then simply a color filter that makes a lamp look brighter but actually allows less lumens through. Ultimately a carefully installed HID mod to the oem headlights is what I would like to do. Like what JKloppe and others here have done...

If you have not yet visited Sterns website , there is a wealth of lighting info there--
well worth checking out--

I took care of the high beams with these Hella driving lights. I purchased the Hella harness which comes with a switch. I mounted the switch in my dash. Looks factory. They only come on when I hit the high beams and yes I get the truck factory high and the driving lights all at the same time. The switch allows me to shut them off at any time. Each one also has a 5 watt 194 bulb inside that act as night lights whenever the headlights are on. Even when the aux lights are off. They backlight the reflector. It's called city lights. It's a cool feature that gives the truck a unique look at night when the high beams aren't on. They have precise but nicely spread beams that you can properly aim so as not to blind oncoming traffic too badly. With three you get center of the road and the sides. I bought the new Philips bulbs to help out with the low beams.

How big of an improvement did you get?

MoparBob, I would have to estimate almost a 20% improvement in both low beam and high beam output by installing the Phillips X-treme Power bulbs.
It was enough of a change that instead of ALWAYS *****ing about my forward lighting when driving at night, I mostly stopped complaining because I could see down the road that much better. It is NOT a night and day difference (sorry, pun intended) but it IS a qualitative improvement.
I have not even yet installed the headlight relay harness, which Stern recommends, to bring higher voltage directly to the headlights. You get even more light output with the higher voltage, but of course at the expense of shorter bulb life. Stern's feelings are that being able to see even better at night is worth the quicker burn out rate and I would have to say he is probably right, I just have not gotten around to doing it on my truck. And now that I have modded my multifunction switch to allow me to use both hi/lo and fog lights at the same time, at least when there is no oncoming traffic, I have stopped complaining almost completely while night driving. The multifunction switch mod (link here -- https://www.turbodieselregister.com...31-bombed-multifunction-high-beam-switch.html ) is one of the best/cheapest mods to do on our trucks!!

It is really too bad that the headlights on our pre 2006 3rd gens are so poorly designed, but these Phillips bulbs atcually DO help enough to make a differnce. It is important to note that they are NOT simply a "brighter looking" bluish bulb, but use an actually improved filament design that throws more light. For $40, you really can't go wrong. I think that the link YoHoot posted even has a 10% summer sale right now.

Thanks,

Pete, BTW I also removed the black air dam that was attached to the bottom of the bumper. It makes the front end look higher and look a bit more aggressive.

I ordered the Phillips X-treme (9007) hb5.

I look forward to getting them installed.

Defiant light bar, Hella's in the near future.

Question: How many wiring harness's from Hella did you need for (3) lights?

I'll have to check I forgot. Not sure but I may have spliced the third one in. Each light comes with the mating plug with a pigtail.

I spliced the third one in. The harness comes with a 25A relay with an integral 25A fuse.

Three of the lights draw about 14 amps... . 55w x 3 = 165w
165/12v=13. 75 Amps

One word of advice... the relay has openings into the internals because of the way the on-board fuse is designed. That means it does not hold up well in the environment. Mine rusted up inside and quit last month after over three years of behind the headlight exposure. I replaced it last week with a Hella relay without the fuse and added an inline fuse at the power source. You could seal the relay up with rtv to help keep the moisture out.
