Mine is over two years. AFE Pro Guard 7 gold. Clean in a bucket hot Simple Green, rinse, air dry, reapply oil. I have two of them so I can simply put on a clean one and not wait.

One other thing, I'm not using the stock air box, mine is the AFE aftermarket w/torque tube. I started out with the stock replacement AFE type. You can also contact AFE support directly, good people.
 
How do you know when it is worn out and time to replace the element? Mine is 5 years old and still looks OK, but how do you know for sure?

I would imagine it would be the same for a drop in filter as it is for the PG-7 for the Stage II intake. I emailed that very question to AFE after purchasing my intake, and here is the response I received back



"We recommend that you follow the manufactures recommended service schedule. Once you reach that mileage, take a look at the filter. If you can still see the metal grid on the filter then it should be ok. I would check every other oil change until it gets dirty enough to warrant cleaning. I hope I answered all of your questions. The trick is to not clean them before they are really dirty. I clean mine once a year (every summer). Mine has been in for five years and it's fine. I created a point of reference to tell if its allowing dirt to slip past the filter element.



I oiled the rubber boot (at the down tube at the turbo inlet) using plain motor oil. At each oil change when i remove the Geno's torque tube I simply wipe the boot clean with a white paper towell, which if there was any dirt present you would see it on the paper towell, then reoil the boot and reinstall it. The AFE PG7 has been an excellent fiter.

I have been doing basically the same thing as Macdaddy. I don't oil my down tube but instead take a white cloth, dampen it, and then wipe the inside of the tube. I thought if dust was getting past something would be dirty in the tube. So far the cloth always comes out clean.
