When I bought my '92 in the spring of '08 the year before it had all the brakes redone. Master cylinder, booster pads shoes etc. The brakes worked good until recently when they have really gone downhill. Especially the rear brakes.

Has anyone had the Metering (hold-off) Valve go bad on them.

I am going to have our local mechanic fix her up. I am also going to have him put in a Chevy front driveshaft with no cv joint for no more trouble with the front driveshaft. Has anyone else done this or offer brake advice. I have eliminated the RWAL valve already.

Thanks Chuck

What does that mean? You have a firm pedal but the vehicle won't slow down... ..... ?

You have a soft pedal from the start? You have a firm pedal at first, then it goes to the floor ... ... . ????

How do you know it is "especially the rear brakes"?

The rear brakes must be constanlty readjusted. You must do this manually. Some master cylinders are known to be that of lesser quality.

I've got to agree with Greenleaf on the rear brakes. This past "spring" with all of it's rain in the Nortwest I saw less than stellar braking in moderate to heavy rain. After adjusting the rear brakes their performance improved dramatically. They need to be adjusted regularly - especially when the stoping power starts to go down hill.

You can "feel" the rear brakes working to hold back the truck. When they don't work right, the front end mushes down and the back end comes up. That, and the fact you feel like something is pushing against you.

When they grab-hold, the truck "feels like" there is something holding it back, like you are pulling a trailer with its brakes on, and the front end of the truck won't mush down on the suspension, the tail end won't come up.

I adjust me rear brakes quite a bit, so I say. Just a click or two about every six weeks. Jolly good.

I adjust the rears but maybe not as often as I should. I have a wheel seal leaking on the drivers side now too. The hold off valve is supposed to limit the front brakes untill the rear shoes have contacted the drums. Maybe I have a whole lot of trouble. My brake light is on darn near all the time. I have to pry up on the brake pedal so my lights are not on(I have the switch adjusted all the way). My pedal is not firm. But look on the bright side she still runs like a scalded ape when you mash the skinny pedal.

One thing to consider if its not adjustment would be the rubber hoses... they might have swelled shut if they are 1992 OE.
