I just got my DMV renewal notice and have been searching the threads regarding my options since I need to get the smog inspection.

Did my CA 1999 Gen 2 come with a cat? I have found many non CA posts stating that the non-CA Gen2's didn't have a cat but I haven't found anyone from CA stating that the CA emission package DID NOT include a cat.

Another way of saying this. The window sticker for the truck indicates $200 for CA Emissions. What were the CA emissions package items? Did it include a cat?

Look on the cpl tag on the timing case. it will tell you what emission controls are on your truck.

Thanks for the response chipster,

I check the timing case area and one tag provided a general statement that says my engine complies with California emission standards for a year model 1998 medium-duty truck, authorized to burn diesel fuel, and OBD II certified. The other Cummins sticker stated I had a ISB-215 engine and other spec's but nothing regarding CA emission devices.

What am I looking for????

I just smogged my 99' a few weeks ago. You have nothing to worry about, because honestly, they have nothing really to check for. You should be in and out in 10min. They never even looked at the exhaust on my truck, like Bob said, there's not cat. Should be rather painless. They scan the OBD-11 and punch in your info and you should be on your way.

Thanks again to Bob4x4 andf JKreiss,

JKreiss: I noticed your '99 is stock and my concern comes from the fact that I have a 4" SS exhaust that a smog tech might assume I have removed the cat. I'm glad to read that your smogging went so easily and it gives me confidence that I can just take it in to a shop. I was hoping that if I get into an argument with the tech, I had something more concrete to point to indicating what CA emission devices were installed. (e. g. , document, tag, etc. )

Paul, my winking eye next to stock was to playfully emply it was. I have a 4" straight pipe, intake horn, full pillar of gages, smarty, and a few other things. I just set the smarty back to stock and washed the right rear quarter panel. If you are at a competant facility, they will have there book open to the page of your vehicle. The book WILL tell them that your truck did NOT come with a cat. It's their book so they shouldn't have any doubt. The only thing i think the book says (someone please correct if i'm wrong) is to check for a crankcase breather and something else, i'm not sure. Now i called around to a few places before i brought it in trying to find a shop that had done quite a few. I was pretty nervous because i didn't know what to expect. For our years, there really wasn't a lot for them to look for, most of it is just hysteria and rumors. Hope that helps.

Joe

Joe:

That's the best explaination I have read to date!

Thanks for taking the mystery out of this year's smog test and putting an end to the hysteria and rumors. It REALLY helps.
