You say the Judge is not legal in CA?
nope, it's not. I have a cool pair of matching single-shot Contenders that came down the family. One is stamped 45LC & the other is 410. Both are choked. Fun to shoot, but a single-shot isn't much for home defense. The Contender was legal for a few months when it first came out, but my understanding is they quickly pulled it from the market soon after it came out. They cited a "short barrel shotgun, or something to that effect. It was before my time, but that's what I heard from my dad. I don't know much else about them & don't shoot them much anymore.

I just picked up another option, and that's a Kimber barrel conversion for my full-size Springfield 1911 (9mm). Change out the slide & barrel and now you have a nice little target shooter that's good for working on technique without having to worry about the different feel of moving from one hand gun to another. Very cheap to play around with, but still has a little discipline involved with shooting.

I would then give thought to the Mossberg JIC (Just in Case Line) of shotguns. take a look. If you attach a flashlight to the end of one of those, The proverbial light at the end of the tunnel may leave you wishing it was a train.

I cant remember the name of the magazine, it's one from the NRA, but my favorite part of it is were it has stories about where people defended thierselves with firearms. there are some pretty good ones in there.

Not the magazine you're talking about, but this site is pretty entertaining for those who like reading such stories:

I was thinking more of a fun gun

Define fun :-laf I have a variety of calibers (. 22, . 38, . 357, . 45, . 44mag, and . 454 Casull) The . 45s are for defense and CCW. All of them are for "fun" :D
I almost prefer the bigger calibers (. 44 and . 454) for the real fun. A couple weekends ago I was shooting with a guy who has a . 45/70 revolver. He left before I got a chance to try it, but I think I would have enjoyed that too  He was wanting to sell it. It was hard to walk away from it.

I'm with Radshooter, they are all fun. I have the same kind of variety that he does except for the 454. But i do have a 30-30 and 45-70 Contender. The 45-70 just barely fits into the fun category. I have never had anyelse want to shoot it more that twice!:-laf:-laf:-laf Randy

yeah that is the section of the magazine i was thinking about. I was thinking of getting another shotgun but wanted something I could easily maneuver in a darkened house, but still put out a little spread. Not to concerned about it going through to my neighbors but that is always something you have to consider. I have too many "fun" weapons, but more never hurts.

I got one too. It is good for home defense. I load mine with 3" 000 BUCK which means 5 pellets . 360 in diameter. Good for close range and you have no fear of sending a bullet into a neighbors house. Like you I hope I never have to use it. My alarm system will alert me. We have the "Castle Doctrine" here in Florida. Other states are slowly adopting it. All 50 should have it. Backward thinking has slowed it down.

We have the castle doctrine in Georgia now too. I also have a carry permit. We are now allowed to carry almost anywhere in Georgia. I would LOVE to get a Taurus Judge. I need to build up my collection of guns, after I had three stolen from a home robbery, while I was at work. I keep my little Glock 9mm either on me or in the vehicle I am driving. The Judge would be one helluva "Don't F--- with me" weapon if someone threatened your life or property!

the judge is on my list of guns to buy. As for whats missing you cant go wrong with a . 22 . I have a little beratta 21a that is fun but for a nice target pistol it would have to be a ruger mark 3. a good friend has a all stainless one and it is sooooo much fun. KEL TEC makes a nice 22 semi auto aswell. I just picked up a ruger 10 22 and its just so much fun and cheep to plink way at cans and bottles.

yeah my dad got a ruger mark 3 a while back and i shot hundreds of rounds through it. just like being a kid again outside all day shooting. the only problem with a ruger 10 22 is they only make 30 round mags for them. they need something bigger.

Other than the fact that it would REALLY suck taking a load of . 410 in the face from 2 ft away, I think the Judge is more of a gimick martketed towards non gun people.

Newer shot loads are interesting but question their effectiveness over 10ft. But I guess you have . 45LC for that, which is not the best defensive round.

There is nothing the Judge can do that my snubby . 357, my . 40 or my 9mm cant do, better.

But if it is all you have it is better than a sharp stick.

Would make a decent snake charmer though, LOL

I don't see any smileys so I guess you are serious. Lets not get into a my gun is better than your gun discussion, as a matter of fact I would not want to be shot even with a air gun. But because your 9mm hold 17 rounds it better than a 45 long colt ( which is not a good defensive load??)

Who wants to get hit with 410 buck shot or a magnum slug ? Look at all the specialty loads they have for the Judge. Some of them are just crazy. Lets face it no one wants to get shot with any gun not even a 22. Lets not start a war over this either. and most fire fights are between 7 and 10 feet.

My son had one of these for a short while. With the . 410 loads, being able to hit anything more than 20 feet away was a real issue. Now some may debate thats okay, just wait till they are close before you shoot. Not me, i like knowing i can hit what i am aiming at. And just for anyone who wants to tell me it was me and not the gun, don't believe it. I have shot many thousand magnum rounds(. 357,. 44) and know about recoil and shot placement. Randy

I am in no way wanting to start a "my gun is better than yours" type thread. I really could care less is anyone wants to spend their money on a Judge.

Just adding my 2 cents based on 1) 15years and counting as a cop 2) being a use of force instructor, including firearms, for the past 12years and counting 3) currently being a homicide detective and having personally seen probably close to 1000 shooting victims in my career and having attended the autopsies of aprox 100 homicide victims, most of which were GSW's.

Based on all of this info and personal experience there are better options out there in defensive handguns and defensive handgun ammo than the Judge, that is all I am saying.

Based on your life's experience I know now that you are a wealth of knowledge . I am not now debating but want to know why a 9mm or a 40 Assuming its a auto also is better than a 40 LC? why would a 357 from a snub be better? I just want to know the facts. Its my understanding that a 45 LC has a great amount of shock value associated with it. The 357 is fast and penetrating the 9mm is also fast and penetrating but they dont have that shock value. Listen any gun is dangerous and deadly thats not the question.

i got it for close quarters strictly. i know in my house the longest i would have to shoot is about 15ft, if that. that being said it still holds a pretty good pattern at that distance. atleast a couple of buckshot are gonna hit the traingle or the body for sure. then hit them with the 45 or 45 lc. i know from experience fast moving rounds don't always put somone down but a 45 will atleast knock them down or off balance. and i got a damn good deal on it too. it defiantly makes a good snake gun too.

Well after reading sooooooo many negative things about the judge I decided to trade mine in and got a Gen 4 Glock 17 instead. I was given a pre ban 17 round mag. So I have like 6 mags now.

And while I was at it I decided the Mossberg 835 tactical turkey gun was not for me either I traded that for a Ruger mark 3 target model with nice cocobolo grips. Some where down the road I will like to get a 45 long colt revolver. So for now I need a cheap 12 gage shot gun. does anyone have one they want to part with?
