I saw a write-up on the Smith and Wesson Bodyguard 380. I was looking for a small concealable pocket pistol and was wondering if anyone has had any experiences with this one.

There were some initial problems with the trigger not coming forward after shooting and I was curious if that problem has been resolved.

IMO the 380 is marginal unless you live somewhere where winter cloths are never used.

I got a colt pocket nine. Small as many 380's with a little more punch.

Winter carry would be a 40 S&W or 45 ACP for me. 357 mag is fine too.

I agree, to me the min is a hot 38+P

I've heard negative comments on the lock up, the front of the cylinder can swing much more than some like on the new S&W BG's.

I have the LCR, great little revolver. .
It was about 200 less than the new BG is around here... and reported that the lock up is better.
The trigger on the LCR is much better than the new metal S&W's.
But I haven't shot a new BG revolver, they have a new trigger set in them.

Some don't like the laser switch on top on the BG, and prefer the grip activated CT on the LCR . . buy the LCR with the CT, and you're now at or 30bux more than the new S&W BG revolver it seems.

If you don't care for a laser now, get the LCR. .
I like wheelguns for when it really counts, another round is just a click away...
no FTF, FTE, lub issues. Autos don't work well in a pocket.

I used to be in the bigger is better boat, but quite honestly a . 380 is going to do damage at self defense range, end of story. If you think otherwise would you let someone shoot you with your winter coat on? Didn't think so. .

I have a Kel-Tec . 380 as my main carry gun becuase its the size of my wallet and fits easily in every pair of pants I own, and there isn't a 9mm out there that would fit so easily.

I still carry a 10mm, . 45, or . 40 as a vehicle gun, but my personal carry gun is the . 380. . Its 10x easier to carry then even my sub-compact guns.

Remember, the first rule of a gun-fight is to bring a gun!

slingshots can cause damage too but.......

IMO you want to "stop" the aggression ASAP.

A 22LR or 25 ACP can "damage' too, but I aint carrying one.

If I'm CCW'ing and am drawing that weapon, it's because of an imminent threat of my/family's life.

I'm not counting on a chihuahua to do a real dogs work. :-laf

The data on shootings clearly shows with a 380 is at the bottom end of marginal for this purpose.

Something is better than nothing, but I'm of the school that if youre going to do it... . do it right the first time.

Choice is yours..... :-{}

It is better to have one than not, and with most people wardrobes many guns are too hard to conceal, or too cumbersome to carry. . I'm 6'4'' and 220, and would have a hard time concealing any of my larger bore guns, ones that I used to consider the only thing to carry. I still carry the larger frames at times, but no matter what I am wearing (swim trunks, flip-flops and no shirt) I can hide the . 380 and carry it comfortably. . can you do that with any . 40, 10mm, . 45 on the market?

A . 45 IMHO is the best caliber for defense against people, but if you don't have it on your person since it too bulky then it does no good. Yes a . 380 is a relatively small caliber, but it will work great even in life and death circumstances (which is the only reason to shoot someone anyhow). Like I said if you think otherwise would you be willing to get shot with one to prove your point (regardless of adrenaline level)? (That is a 100% hypothetical question, which is ALL it needs to be).

. 22LR has killed more people than ANY other caliber, I would rather carry a . 22 than nothing as well.

When looking at different calibers for different reasons you have to consider 3 things. Penetration, knockdown power, and killing power. This is why I like the . 45, on a human target you get great penetration, but generally doesn't exit(due to the large diameter and slow velocity), which leads to knockdown power since the all of the energy is dispersed in the target. A 10mm has more penetration, and does more wound track damage, but since it will generally pass thru a human target (smaller diameter and high velocity) the knockdown power is lower than that of a . 45, thou it has more killing power due to the wound track damage. This is why I have a 10mm in my truck, more apt to have issues with wildlife than humans, and a . 45 in my DD, and a . 40 or . 357 here and there :)

The . 380 may not have the best penetration, but penetrate it will and all of its energy is dispersed in the target, making it an okay round for shooting humans. Like a . 22, it has the small size and initial energy to penetrate, but then lacks the energy to exit and will quite likely "rattle" around inside a rib cage rather than exit, which is probably going to kill at a rapid rate, one of the reasons the . 22LR has killed so many people.

I'm not trying to start an argument, just point out the data that I looked at prior to buying my . 380 as I used to think the same way.

But like you said its all personal preference, carry what you want. . What I love about this country!

Lady smith

Wife pack's a Lady Smith is 38 spcl I do the reload to me the gun is to small bite's my thumb every shot. For her it's great I dont think much of the 38 but the gun is easy to pack and the 38's will STING im sure. For me I like my Para in 45 if you shoot and dont drop them you will have a very large chunk of DNA

I like the way you think;)

Thanks, too bad I'm in the minority here in NJ.

When I carry a gun (seldom... no ccw here) I carry a full size 1911 in either 45 acp or 38 super/9x23. (Springfield armory/Kimber stainless) I use a Milt Sparks IWB versa max II. I also have an old series 70 Combat commander in 45 I've carried. EGW has done work on both the SA and the Colt CC. I did a "drop in" trigger on the Kimber.
I'm 5'11" and 220.
Shorts weather I carry my Colt pocket nine. It's has the full treatment from Scott/McDougall. Federal 9 BPLE load.
My everyday carry here in the state is an Emerson/Benchmade CQC9. I hope I never need it.

If someone is acting in such a way that I'd need to use a gun, I believe they need to be stopped IMMEDIATELY!
Not "hurt" or "damaged: Killed.
I would not take drawing a weapon lightly. They can have my money, but not me or my family's well being. That's where the line is drawn.

You are going to get a lot of people telling you a . 380 won't stop a person. I seen a guy shot by the KNP with a . 380, and I promice you he didn't get up and ask why he was shot, or ouch, or anything. The gun will kill a person. The newer . 380 ammo is better than hardball. I would look at the Ruger. Bersa makes an excellent . 380, barrel on frame, very accurate.

As far as the comment about the 38 Super, please remember that a wepon was made long ago called the 9MM Largo. It is a 9X21, or . 38 ACP. You can not shoot a 38 super in a 9MM Largo. It will blow the gun up. You can, if you can find it, shoot . 38 ACP in a Largo.

Good luck,

I like to carry my rohrbaugh r9 its the smallest 9mm, and a total custom gun... expensive but well worth the price... forget about the 380 stuff... ... ...

Bersa makes an excellent . 380, barrel on frame, very accurate.

I have a Bersa 380 Concealed Carry for the summer months and it's one of my favorite pieces. (I usually carry a Springfield XD-40 sub-compact otherwise)

Corbon and others make modern 380 cartridges that easily meet and exceed the FBI's minimum penetration and expansion requirements.

I also have a Bersa . 380 that I carry all the time. Never had a problem out of it and as stated it is very accurate. Hornadys Critical Defense has some nice results as far as penetration and lethality in the . 380
