I am getting stuff together for a tranmisson fluid change. I have been using Pennzoil ATF+3, but I don't think it is made anymore. From what I have read it has been replaced by ATF+4, which is supposedly backwards compatible and is a synthetic. I could buy the ATF+3 by the gallon last year, but I don't think ATF+4 is packaged or sold by the gallon, only by the quart.

Where do you guys buy you transmission fluid? Is the Walmart brand OK to use?

I buy Valvoline ATF+4 at Walmart for ~$4. 85 qt. Not available in gallons. The ATF+4 formula is "supposed" to be the same, but I don't get a warm and fuzzy feeling with the Walmart label for my expensive transmission.

My 2001 FSM says ATF+4 for the transmission and 14 - 16 litres for a full fill. I haven't looked what my owner's manual says.

Dex-Merc is cheaper. It will make your transmission shift a little firmer is all. Doesnt DTT recommend to use it also.

Yes, DTT recomends Dex-Merc. I think Dex-Merc III, but could be mistaken. I keep a spare quart so when it's time to change I don't have to remember.
