I am useing Valvoline premium blue extreme full synthetic cj-4, ci4 plus, ci-4, cg-4, cf-4, cf/sm type oil in my 2004 5. 9 3500 truck.

I am useing the 5w-40 oil is this the correct oil and viscosity for my vehicle?.

I live in the high desert of california, in Lancaster and I drive 200 miles a day and change my oil every month.

If your '04 is the 305 engine and still runs clean, you should be able to go 3-4 months on an oil change. I use Amsoil HDD 5/30 in mine, which is still a CI-4 rated oil, not the newer CJ spec. Last time I had it sampled, the 18K oil was no where near the end of its life. The oil in the picture has 14K miles on it with a filter change about 5K miles ago.

Unless you are headed someplace really cold, I think I'd stay with the recommended 15/40 ..... just my . 02 !

I absolutely agree with this. If you're not running in extreme cold, I see little reason to be running 5w-40 full synthetic.

I recognize, however, that me and MMeier are probably in the extreme minority on this opinion. Seems like almost everyone runs synthetic oil these days.

Rotella 15w40 has been my oil of choice now for a combined 800,000 miles in the four trucks I currently own. The 3 on road trucks get the oil changed between 12k and 15k along with a Fleetguard filter.

If I understand correctly that you drive 4000 miles a month you could easily go 2 or 3 months between changes considering you drive 200 miles a day. And that would be using Rotella. If you continue using the synthetic then go with what the manufacturer recommends.

Godspeed,
Trent

I have run Amsoil 5w-30 HDD and Amsoil AME 15w-40, and I get better UOA with the AME. But mine is an 05, so the oil is black as the night . 2 seconds after a change.

I see nothing wrong with the oil you are running. I prefer a CI oil for the Zinc, but CJ is fine.

I run Valvoline P B Classic API CI-4 plus API CI-4 API CH-4 CG-4 CF-4 CF/SL Viscosity 15 it is made from oil only from the USA. I help to keep people working in the USA and keep money at home. I only have enough to change my oil 3 more times that is 30. 000+ miles. The government has had Valvoline to change their oil to meet emissions. So I bought up all I could fine.

I have not seen CI Delo in quite some time. The website still lists Delo 400 CI-4+ in a 15w-40, but like I said, haven't seen it in years.

blacksheepdiesel is giving good advice. we run a fleet of dodges and some have near or over 1,000,000 miles on them i use 15w-40 dello 400 because i have a dealer near me. but rotella t is just as good. use the fleetguard lf16035 filter and if it is a 325 04. 5 you need to add a bypass filter. do not change the bypass filter until it no longer flows oil. this is where it does it's best filtering. near oil change time just feel the filter if it is hot it's ok. the pre 04. 5 is ok at 15,000 miles but if it is post i would change at 10,000 unless you add the bypass filter. the incylinder egr scheme used in them causes massive amounts of carbon in the oil. the oil can only hold about 5% carbon, this go's for both synthetic or dyno so they must be changed at the same mileage. ci4 oil is still readily available. they can not sell it in quarts or gallons. it is only legal to sell it in 5 or 55 gallon barrels and is cheaper than cj4 the reason is the off road equipment can use the ci4 but if you accidently run ci4 oil for very long in a 6. 7 it severely shortens the life of the dpf filter. but once you remove the dpf you can go to ci4 oil

huh... . I can by CI rated engine oil in quart and single gallon form... . Atleast last week I could.

You are right that it can also be purchased in 5 gal. , 55 gal. , and bulk quantities.

I purchased some just last week in single gallon form.

What brand of CI rated oil is available in MI and NC. I have been using Chevron DELO 15W40, but would feel better using CI oil in my 06 5. 9.

Extended Oil Drain Intervals With Chevron Delo-400, CI-4+???

My '03, HO 305 HP. has about 85,000 miles on it & I have only used the Delo CI-4+. I bought all they had at Costco & have about 3 cases left. I change oil annually & always use a Fleetguard LF-16035 filter.

The last couple of years, I have been trying to extend the oil drain intervals from about 5000 miles, on up. Each of these oil changes I have had used oil analysis done, which, showed the oil to still be in good condition. One of the last oil changes had over 10,000 miles on it & the analysis said that it was still in good condition. However, when I changed the oil, the engine seemed to be quieter as if the old oil was not lubricating well enough.

Does anyone think that a quieter, smoother running engine is a good indicator that I had stretched the oil change too far? Or, is the used oil analysis a better indicator? If so, why would the engine be quieter with the new oil? Enquiring minds want to know!!!!!!

With that in mind, I've decided to lessen the mileage on the future oil changes to maybe around 7000 miles, or thereabout, for now.

I'd be interested in your opinions.

I found CKelly1's post to be interesting. He's running a fleet of Dodges with some having over 1 million miles on them & changing the oil at 15,000 mile intervals. Since I'll never live long enough to put a million miles on a Cummins, I wonder if the extra noise coming from the old oil isn't doing any damage to the engine? Any thoughts???

Thanks.

With bypass filtration, I've take CJ4 Rotella to 20k with UOA indicating it was suitable for continued use.

CJ4 holds up just fine... provides just as good of numbers as CI4+ in UOAs I've done on each. I would not stress over the lack of production of CI4+, pick your favorite brand of oil and use it to a schedule that makes you comfortable (with UOA as a baseline).

they can not sell it in quarts or gallons. it is only legal to sell it in 5 or 55 gallon barrels and is cheaper than cj4 the reason is the off road equipment can use the ci4
I don't know where you are getting your information, but you have been misslead. There are many oil Companies still producing CI-4PLUS oils, AMSOIL Inc. included, and can be purchased in Quarts, Gallons, 2 1/2 Gallons, 5 gallons, 30 Gallons, 55 Gallons and 250 Gallon "Totes. "

Caterpillar branded oil... which is Mobil oil with a slightly different additive package that Mobil... both are excellent oils. Cat has CI+ rated oil, CJ, Synthetic, etc... 1 gal. p/n is 248-7518 (dont ask how I know. )

While there may not be a Cat dealer in your area, I'm sure Mobil oil is readily available.

The Monograde is basically for N. G. engines.

The next four are for diesels...
