As many of you had read, I melted my fuel tank a few weeks ago while on a cross country trip. While going up a 7% grade mountain in Wyoming with 11K lbs of trailer behind, I was running 1300F on my pyro. Due to the long hill, my exhaust pipe and stack Y expanded at different rates and my exhaust let go, now dumping the hot exhaust onto my fuel tank. It melted the entire top around the sending unit assembly until the band clamp lip was gone, then the spring loaded assembly sprung up and hit the bottom of the bed!

This was the result:

After about 7 hours on the side of the road I did manage pick up a transfer tank for a tractor, strap it INTO the bed, pick up 25 feet of fuel line, cut factory fuel lines and plumb it to the back of the lift pump. That lasted the remainder of the 8000 mile trip.

This is what it looked like:

Now that I am home again, I am making repairs. As you can see, I have located a replacement tank, but I am having extreme difficulty finding a new sending unit assy.

Seems no one has one, nor does Dodge still offer it, and the aftermarket has nothing either! :{

Anyone know where I can find one?

Thanks!

Oh, and here is the link to the original post of being stranded! Was a tough day thats for sure. Thanks to all, ESPECIALLY Robin, Greg aka GHarmin, everyone at Geno's Garage and the gentlemen in Rock Springs WY (sorry! In all of the ciaos I forgot your name! ), who spent the time with me on the phone trying to help me locate a tank! The TDR is a great place with very willing members! I never thought I would actually need the Travel Companion, but I am so thankful for the folks who have their names in it. Your willingness to help others is highly respected and appreciated!

I was looking at one a year ago at our 1st gen event in IN. I wasn't aware these are unavailable... ... ... ... . I know I have read folks buying parts for these. If they ARE rare, then I doubt Philip is going to part with his, but I'll ask him.

ps

nice job on the OE fuel tank... looks a bit forlorn.

Why not just start from scratch?

Hey, on a serious note, I saw from the pictures you posted of your truck last summer that your exhaust was hannging low and crooked. I should have warned you then... .....

But I can head-off certain disaster for you yet. Tugboat had one of them plastic wheel chocks like you have in your bed. His truck crushed that plastic chock and ran down (backwards mind you) the hill behind his home and didn't stop untill the momentum was slowed by a large pine.

... ... ... I'm just saying.

Just did a little cyber-slacking at lunch and found this guy. . maybe you already have but just in case... .....

Rebuilt Fuel Sending Unit Specialist

Might be worth a call or e-mail to him. Looks like he has a very clever fix for the 2nd gens so maybe he can help you with your 1st gen issue.

Hope this helps. :)

Mike.

Lol. I know the pic you are talking about. That was disconected purposely. Was installing a 4" turbo back. Although that is much what the pipe looked like when pulled over on the side of the road!;)

As for the chock, it's steel for that very reason!:D

Mike,

Thanks! I was not aware of him!:)

I did call this afternoon and he has two non useable ones but nothing good! ;)

Oh well. That sucks! :-laf

Appreciate your cyber-slacking on my behalf! :D

How about using a 2nd gen cannister? Thats the upgrade route when bigger lines and fittings are needed. I believe everything is the same on them and they work fine. Maybe need a few mods but thats easy, right? :)

I believe that trick works for the 91-93 trucks, but not for the 89/90. I picked up a 93 sender in hopes it would fit the new 90 tank. I was wrong. :(

Tank hole is 5" and the 93 sender is like 5. 75" +. If I was to open up the hole I would have no lip left for holding the assembly in either. :(

The 93 style uses a screw on big plastic nut. The non IC trucks use a band clamp.

Woops! That would be a problem. Learn something new every day.

How about a later model tank? Are there major differences in the tank size, shape, location?

Yeah, small problem! :-laf

I looked at a 94+ tank in a boneyard. Crossmembers in the wrong spot. It has bumps and lumps on the rear that I dont think would clear the box floor and would end up in a crossmember. Shape is wrong too... . :{

I tell ya, these Non IC trucks really are a special thing to get parts for! ;)

I really meant a 92-93 tank, not the gen 2 ones. My bad, not clear. :p

I am thinking a transfer flow tank if they still make them may be the way to go, albeit a spendier one.

Oh. Right. I knew that. ;)

I think a 91-93 tank will work. Did not see too much difference. Might have to go that way although I already purchased a 90 tank! ;)

Transfer flow may still be an option yet too.

I know if I ever had to pull my tank for a replacement, I'd be putting the thing in the bed! That would be the perfect fix for me. I don't use the bed, really. Besides, with my stacks in there I can't help friends/family move furniture!!! LOL !!!

Man, I would love an in bed tank.

I just discovered that I have the ability courtesy of a vendor to look up Dodge parts to a certain degree.

I only know enough to be dangerous at this point but from what I am seeing using 89, 90, and 91 vintage trucks is this, the melted gob of plastic is not a sending unit. Your sending unit is hooked to the side of the plastic gob visible in the photo. Is it possible that you are asking for the wrong item???

Dodge persists in calling that gob a fuel pump even though it does not contain a pump.

I come up with Part # 52004637 for a 1990 Diesel truck.

See next post from me for picture.

If you have this covered already, just ignore me..... :-laf

You can't hurt my feelings, I'm a parts guy.

Thought it might be worth a mention.

Let me know.

The unit for a '90 gasser is only one part number off. Wonder if you could modify a gas one by removing the pump unit provided the opening, etc. is the same size??? It is quite likely that the vendor who produced these units for Dodge in gas and diesel applications would have used the same plastic tank unit/pump holder for either part number. It would certainly open up your options a bit.

The 30 gallon tank part number are not the same between gas and diesel but that could simply be a venting or fuel filler tube difference.

The diameter of the fuel pump hole may still be the same for either use.

Maybe Sag2 or somebody can lend us some hands on advice about this.

Here is the 1990 Diesel set-up.
