I currently own a 24 valve vp truck. I have gone trough the truck and fixed everything on it. I now have an opportunity to trade for a '97 12 valve that is equal condition and mileage. I know the differences in the engines, but has far has living with it everyday and driveablity, is there any major advantages/ disadvantages of the 12 valve vs the 24?

If your state starts visual testing for emissions, your 99 might be in trouble. The custom injection lines for a P pump to 24 valve head may or may not be durable, and aren't easy to find if one fails.

It is a casting problem with the 99's. They tend to crack along below the exhaust manifold. Maybe Joe Donnely will elaborate in this.

I am happy with my 98 12v.

You will have make sure the kdp is taken care of and you mite need to replace the exhaust manifold( at 240,000 mine doesn't look like it has shrunk).

The p7100 pump is more durable then the VP44 pump (although my Freightliner's vp44 is holding up good at 180,000).

Is the 97 a reg cab or club cab? Four doors are nice if you have more than 1 person riding with you but the club isn't to bad,a liitle harder for people to get in the back seat but I haven't had any one ride in back seat for years. Plus you don't have to worry about anything falling out the backdoor when you open it.

I prefer not to have an ECM on my truck I like the mechanicalibity (i know not a word ) of the 12v. dont like having the voltage reg in a computer. The ecm does have the advantage of different tunner controls though. I am a mechanic type person not a geek and that is what you need to deal with the 24v's

ive had both and i really prefer the 12v. there are advantages to both and it really boils down to personal preference. although since your asking for an opinion and you say the trucks are comparable i would trade. again personal preference the 12v is just a good solid motor where the 24v doesnt seem to be as much.
