The muffler and tailpipe on my truck are both shot, and i'm looking to replace them pretty soon. Is there a performance muffler that anyone can recommend? The truck in question is a '91 D250 2wd if it matters...

Hey Nick!

Well, that depends on what you want to do with it. If you want to remain stock, add a bit of sound to it, add performance, or even do step one of a 4" system while you can (muffler back can be 4" with an adapter on the front of the muff from 3" to 4" that way if you ever decide to change it, you do not have to redo the back half... ).

Second thought is do you want a direct bolt in or make it work if you get more from it?

If you want a bolt in, go here about all the way to the bottom of the page:

Diesel headers and exhaust systems for high performance automotive engines.

Stans is a good company and many here have had good results from them including myself. They have also been around for a long time.

If you want to do it somewhat on your own, I would suggest picking up a MBRP resonator/muffler and fabbing up a tailpipe that aims where you want it. NICE sound! :D

Now if you want just a stock replacement and do not want to do the work yourself, go to a muffler shop and get them to order a DIESEL muffler, some pipe, and budda bing you got yourself a running truck.

Hope that helps!

Robert

I would also suggest you look at Source Automotive Performance Diesel. Rip has 4" kits and they are competitively priced. I am running his and I'm told by quite a few that they like the sound my system emits. Due to my turbo mounted exhaust brake my down pipe is one used on second gens but the muffler was one I picked out of Rips existing stock. Since I live close to his shop he was the one doing the installation. You can look at my sig for my numbers.

Bob

Persoanlly I think the sound from the Rip's 4 inch system is the best I've heard.

That said any 4 inch system will be an improvement over stock for performance.

Hey Bob

Do you have any pictures of your down pipe? I want to upgrade mine to 4", but I wasn't sure how to with the exhaust brake in place.

I don't have any pics but it's a 4" second gen down pipe. Since I'm running an PDRHX35 my setup repalces the short curved exhaust piece coming off the turbo with the a BD Exhaust Brake. This in turn will bolt right on to the down pipe. I did build a new rear trans support which allows for a straight run of 4" exhaust pipe right into the muffler.

Bob

That's not a bad deal, I don't think, either. I've used Flowmaster's 17309? and some of the Bully Dog kits from Summit Racing, and both are reasonably priced, until I see that up there! Very nice. And what's the difference in 2 to 4WD? Is it not contoured to pass by the T-case? I like the looks, but I have a shifter stick on the RIGHT side!!:D

I have an inline PAC brake PRXB with full 4" system. If you need pics, let me know. Not sure it will apply but... .

Thanks for the offer, I think I figured out what Bob B. did, he used the 2nd gen. DP from Rip to get 4" and connect to the EB. Does yours look like the attached pic?

Thanks

Thats what the down pipe looks like. On the turbo end I've got my exhaust brake, which replaces the cast piece that comes off the turbo on a 2nd gen.

Bob

The main reason I like the 2nd gen down pipe is simple hydraulic flow. Diesels like less restriction in exhaust flow so I wanted to remove as many 90 degree bends as possible, wherever possible. I built my own intake system, A/F to turbo. Tim Worline provided the turbo to engine 3" piping and I used a Banks Techinicooler for better flow. The silencer ring on my PDRHX35 has been left in because I feel that removing it creates turbulance as opposed to clean air flow - the same with the OEM A/F to turbo setup. When I installed my Snow W/M injection the "T" fitting they supplied did not provide a clean path for flow so I replaced it with a "Y" fitting. Some think I may heve carried this too far but I feel that my numbers support my ideas. My mileage remains at 19+ MPG in mixed driving, 22+ MPG in freeway driving all with an on the scale weight of 7000 lbs. All these have contributed to my close to 400RWHP on #2and 440 RWHP with W/M injection.

Bob

yes there is. It is rather inexpensive. just leave the muffler off and run a straight pipe out the back.

Has anyone noticed on the description of the diamond eye exhaust system that they say "off road",is that another way of saying not quite street legal?
My local cops are a pain lately, and I almost got a ticket earlier this week for a loud exhaust on my daily beater '91 ranger, and it's only missing the tail pipe. I could list you off ten local vehicles that are MUCH louder than that truck.
