Arrived home this evening, as I was backing 5er up small grade to park the engine quit. Restarted for about 3 seconds and quit again, this time permanently. As I was near empty on fuel I assumed the truck was out of diesel. Added 5 gallons. Purged lift pump at vp44 banjo, plenty of pressure.

Loosened injectors 1,3,4,5 to prime vp44. No joy. Only slight pressure from fittings, no where near normal. Retried three times no success. Checked lift pump pressure, it's 15 psi at idle (Glacier aftermarket lift pump. ) Unhooked fiver and pushed truck onto level pavement. Retried the whole process. Never one pop. I can hear fuel recirculating after jogging the starter. I have noticed occasional hard starting recently. Truck runs full power (31 pounds boost) when it last ran. Bad VP44? Help...

Jay,

You didn't mention how many miles you have on your current VP44, but with those symptoms and that DTC, it sure does sound like it's bit the dust. Time to install a good rebuilt unit.

Good luck,

John L.

Truck has 93500 miles. Some history of bad lift pumps in the past. Injector pump connector has +12 and ground on pins 7 and 6 respectively as specified on start and run. Only a dribble out of injector fittings after repeated priming attempts. Ordering a VP44; any suggestions on vendors appreciated. I'm interesting in quality and service life more than price.

Jay,

I'm pretty partial to Midwest Fuel Injection myself because they have a solid reputation for delivering a quality rebuild, good technical support, and excellent customer service at a competitive price. If you search the web you can find slightly lower prices from a few rebuilders, but in exchange you could wind up having to pay a core deposit up front (MWFI doesn't do this), receive unknown quality, and get little or no technical support. You can also find MUCH more expensive prices on VP44's from some resellers (not always the actual rebuilder) who claim their products are superior in some vague way. I've never been able to convince myself it's worth the extra cost for supposed "special" VP44's because Bosch sets minimum standards which all of their certified VP44 rebuilders must adhere to. So long as the rebuilder you're dealing with is indeed Bosch certified, then that's adequate in my mind.

Best regards,

John L.

Thanks for all the help guys. Bought a pump from Chip Fisher and it's already up and running. No p216s were set;P1688 was set 3 times. I've always used commercial diesel fuel and stanadyne additive since low sulfur came out. I believe mechanical wear was minimal since there is absolutely no performance change with the new pump. Therefore is was failure of the electronics. I noticed the plastic heat barrier between the block and the pump was broken. Don't know if the barrier is necessary but don't plan to replace it. I am using a high flow 15 psi Glacier lift pump for the past 3 years after 3 carter pump failures. I believe the high fuel flow assists in keeping the pump cooler but can't explain why the electronics chose now to fail. The engine was hot after a hard tow. I had also noticed occasional extra startup cranking time (both hot and cold) on an intermittent basis for the past year or so. SO if you're noticing this effect you may suspect imminent injection pump electronic failure.

Now that one has me perplexed. There are no heat shield/barriers on these engines.

I'm wondering if something fell in there. there is a fair amount of plastic on the TPS housing above the VP.

Got any pictures?

Glad you got her up and running again.
