My fuel module is beat up some and I was researching draw straws. Vulcan has nothing mentioned for first gens except for drilling the tank and installing a grommet but they caution against not running the tank much below 1/4. I/m not interested in that option. Is the grommet in our module a different size than the second gens or might they fit and function? I have a module from a gas truck but they are a little different, one thing being a filter on the bottom instead of a screen. My screen is worn through among other things and I haven't been able to find another. I have already replaced the fuel line with a 3/8 supply and 5/16 return. Am I going down the right track or is there another method.

If you want to just replace the cannister with a 2nd gen unit. Large lines and no associated problems with 1/4 tank issues. Generally, as long as the fuel return is plumbed intot he cannister you can even add a new draw straw to the cannister and be good.

Thanks for getting back to me. You're saying the second gen fuel module will fit my fuel tank and locking collar and then just go with that? I may have to get some different size quick disconnects, right? Where do I find one of those, at the dealer? Will the fuel gauge work? Lots of questions, Thanks again.

IIRC, its a swap fit and the gauge works fine. Been a while since I went thru that and don't remember the details.

Yes, the lines are a bit larger and you should be able to source the parts from a dealer, or, just build your own setup. You might want to take this chance to redo the lines from the tank to the LP. They do rust and the rubber deteriorates over time. Up-sizing the lines won't hurt a thing.

I ordered a module for a 95 online. It should be here next week. Its gonna be easy to install, I've got the cab and bed off the truck. I already have a 3/8 rubber line for a supply and I am getting a 5/16 return. Just got to figure a way to secure the lines to the frame. When the cab gets back from the paint shop I can start putting it together. Thanks for the tip.

Yes. For anyone also searching for info on this subject in the future, this swap only works for the gen 1. 5s. The pre 1991. 5 trucks will not work with this swap. If you look up my melted tank incident I think I posted pics. They use a band clamp collar and not a big nut style.

Glad to hear you have it worked out!

P. S. If you need parts over the cource of your project and cant find a hard to find first gen part, look here: Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market

I have a solution for anchoring the lines, have ol' E-Bay in the garage right now to change a stripped axle. I will snap a few photos of my lines while I am under the truck to show what Seth and I rigged up and post them later on today. It is a double wire tie that pushes onto the protruding threads of a 1/4" bolt. It is a Freightliner part, I will provide a part number with the pics as well. Works SLICK!!

Part number of this tie is TYC DCT110HIR.

A very simple way to anchor the two fuel lines.

We used 1/4 X 1" bolts and put them through existing holes in the truck's frame, put the nut on and tighten it, then push the hole in the tie onto the threads that remain.

Here are some pics... .

Please ignore the fabric softener in the background, used garage sink for photo op... ...
