Real power

BIGNASTY,

HughesNet is a lot better than dial-up but, in my opinion not as good as a good cable system. There is a slight annoying delay once you push the button on your keyboard, sending the signal to the satellite, which then gets relayed to the ground terminal, then out to the internet to grab your stuff, then up to the satellite and back down to your computer. Once the connection has been completed the data flows pretty darned fast. We live out in the country and have two choices, slow land line or satellite.

I thought about going to WildBlue when it became available, but their packages are not as fast or have the same download capability.

Every now and then severe weather at either end can bring things to a halt for a short time. Years ago, at our previous house, we were on cable and experienced more outages due to weather, idiots mowing down telephone poles with their cars, or system hardware issues with @home, AT&T or Comcast than we have had with HughesNet.

There are limits to the amount of data you can download per day. We're on a 425MB package which is adequate for our needs. We don't do streaming video much. The lovely wife occassionally gets carried away and views a bunch of (too many at one time) quilting and artsy crapsie videos that puts us into the FAP mode (Fair Access Policy) for 24 hours. You can sign up for one of several packages to suit your download requirement needs. They even allow you to purchase additional megabytes if you exceed your package's limits.

Bottom line, we are pleased with their service packages and customer service.

BIG - A friend of mine lives about 40 miles southeast of town and he absolutely loves it. His only complaint is the same as mine with DirecTv... Some times, when it is raining VERY hard your signal goes to poop and if it snows, you might have to broom off the dish! Otherwise, he absolutely loves his HughesNet and says he wouldn't trade it for anything! Hope this helps!!!

Ive talked with others any they are of the same opinion as your two posts. I dont know to much about computers and have a hard time with the TV remote. So if it works most of the time ill be happy. I guess when your about 5 miles from any power source I cant gripe. Living off the grid will be a pretty big change for us. But with no utility bills except for propane ill live with it

... Im moving to MT and Im going off grid ( bet some are jumping for joy)...

And some of us are torn between "green with envy" and "inspired".

Good luck, my friend! I hope it turns out to be all we dream it to be. Keep me posted!

Wow! "Off-grid in Montana". I'll be lucky if my ashes ever achieve that...

BIG - One more thought, from the wisdom well that is my father, if you are THAT far from "power", invest in a decent generator that will allow you to be able to run your fridge, freezer and some lights.

When my Dad lost power during an ice storm in 99, he lost an estimated $8000 worth of food because they were without commercial power for over 20 days straight!

And yes, I am EXTREMELY jealous!!! Enjoy!!!

Fyi

They make refrigerators that run on kerosene. Theyre quite pricey.

I believe you could find them at Lehmans in Ohio.

Jelous? Envious? Yes. :-laf

Have that problem in hand a gen set that runs on propane. along with the propane tankless water heater. For most of the power its Solar and wind gen. If it gets bad enough that the solar wont work up to par the wind is always blowing in storms. At least thats the plan. It sounds great but to be honest Im scared CHITLESS. Its a HUGE move from what we are use to. City boy to what my wife calls me now the CAVEMAN when I retired no shaving no haircuts (not that I need that on top ) Gray Wolf said it best folicly challenged.

I have a 12kw lp gas standby generator setup with an automatic transfer switch. It has a dedicated 1000 gallon tank. You'll get along fine. I don't know how your house/cabin/cave is setup or if it is even built yet, but you can't go wrong with radiant floor heat and installing a wood or (here in Iowa anyway) corn boiler outdoors and separate from the house.

Together with a cheery woodburner and trusty Stihl, not to mention a diesel woodhauler, you will be way ahead of the pioneers from not so long ago, and they survived and even thrived.

Have your wife watch "Jeremiah Johnson" a couple of times. Assure her you "know how to skin griz!" ;)

That's my favorite movie I watch it when ever it comes on she just looks at me and said and you have a problem with me watching OC housewives. She is looking forward to going home we got married when she was 20 and wanted to see the big city (L. A) she made me get rid of my truck and get a driver job CHEVRON. (I have never told her but I will never forgive her for that) So going to MT is where her family is and I have always loved the outdoors. Her dad, brother , her and her sisters all go hunting every year. They are the real deal set up Tee Pee's and the whole works. They all laugh at me and ask why I dont set up my camp like the Mountain Men did. Tee Pee's are REALLY nice in the woods and during storms. I told her that ill build a cabin and she can stay in the Tee Pee when we move. Well I dont have to tell you that wasnt to smart on my part, as far as skinning griz she is and has always been wicked with a kinfe when it comes to skinning an elk she is hands down the best

My uncle has a really nice cabin that he built himself on a beautiful Montana salmon river that I have never been to. He is over 80 and I really, really want to take my sons and wife out there this summer and spend some time with him in God's Country.

It is very remote and, knowing how passionate I am about Montana, and hunting and fishing, he has often encouraged me to come build next to him. My mom has brought me hours of video that she shot while spending several weeks there. Watching them stirs my very soul it is so beautiful there. But I have to work and paying jobs are pretty scarce in the Montana wilderness. Heck, they're pretty scarce here. But in a few more years, my sons will have graduated high school and I will be allowed the luxury of considering what I want to do instead of only what I must do.

I also have a cousin near Missoula who pilots some rich guy's private Gulf Stream jet for him as a fulltime gig and guides hunts in his ample spare time. Nice life if you can get it.

When I decided it might be time to show the woman I wanted to marry just exactly what it is that I want out of life (besides her), I took that New Jersey city girl who had never even seen the Rockies on a trip to Glacier with a stop at Flathead Lake for some lake trout fishing. Yellowstone, Rushmore, etc was all along the way, too.

That was 20 years ago and Iowa is a great place to raise a family, but its getting too crowded and too hard to find places to hunt for my tastes. Too many family farms being turned into low income housing and high income housing and warehouses and condominiums and golf courses.

I'm almost afraid to see how Montana has changed over the same 20 years after seeing what has happened to Jackson Hole, Yellowstone, Rapid City, and even Iowa in that time.

Change

Montana has changed but at least at a slower rate. The nearest town is Seeley Lake it hasn't really changed much a few more stores and other shops but mainly just a little town at the base of the Bob Marshall wilderness. Our place backs up the the Bob so we will never have anyone on that side of us. We are happy to finally get to go we were expecting a few more years in Calif but when my job was gone well we figured now is good also. Our kids are grown and have their careers to tend to. My wife grew up near Seeley lake and her family lives there so it will be nice for her. I talk bad about Calif but it has been good for us I dont think that I could have made the money that I did driving a truck to many other places. But it has been a long time planning this move and its time to do it. Im 57 my wife is 53 so we can still get out to enjoy the mountains before we just get to look at them. We love to take our horses and mules and go for a week or two in the real back country that most never get to see not to be selfish but that's the way we like it. We enjoy our TT and Dodge but that is different. I took the wife away form Montana she wanted to go also. She has been to Europe and I really liked taking her just to see the expression on her face. Its the same look when we go to Montana. Building the home isnt as big a task at one might think we are using the SIP method its insulated panels and goes up fast and is really energy efficient. Her brother has built one and he heats the place with wood stoves he has 2 or 3 but only need 1 going most of the time. I think its just a big change and it makes me nervous but as soon as we get going I think it will pass. At least it better

I know a guy that lives out that way.

He says that even the game warden isnt fazed when they happen upon each other in the woods and my buddy is totin a beltfed RPK.

He even drives around it in the truck front seat! (owns a CTD)

Did mention that he's a little crazy?:-laf

IIRC He's in Rexford.

Packin a gun out there is like having a cowboy hat on nobody thinks anything about it. I think it's a little diffrent having a easy rider rifle rack full of shotgun in Compton Calif. :-laf

I dont know on how you plan this, but this is a SMOKIN deal.

I feel like getting it just for my dream house.

BRAND NEW BUCKET-A-DAY COAL HOT WATER STOVE SAVE $$$ - eBay (item 230574279780 end time Feb-14-11 05:02:02 PST)

Im not sure it's anything like it but my Bro inlaw and I were hunting and we had a coal stove to heat in the tent. After a long hard day of hunting all I wanted to do was sleep so he started the stove and hit the hay. The rest of the hunting party came in to camp and said our tent looked like it was on fire the coal had gone out and just smoked. I had a cough for the rest of the trip. That was the worst trip I have ever had.

Ya gotta have a stove with a "coal grate" so it can breath. A regular stove allows the coal to set down in the ashes and cant get oxygen. I have an old G. I. surplus arctic pack stove with the cast iron coal grate. I has kept me nice and toasty in the tent, sleepin in my "birthday suit":-laf, snug in my bedroll. My clothes are hung on a line to dry out. I've never been "smoked out". I do usually mix the firebox load with wood. That coal really gets hot with the proper air mix. You can burn through the sheetmetal in a standard sheepherders stove, in short order, with coal.

Around here, coal has been hard to buy for several decades. I know of a couple of coal seams in road cuts but they are right in front of private property. Over on the Western Slope, coal is much more available. With the right chimney height, some diesel fuel soaked wood chips for fire starter, chunks of dry wood and a supply of anthricite, you could stay dry and warm in any weather condition. Use big chunks. Stay away from the fine stuff. Try to keep it from breaking up when handling and during transport. It does have an odor you'll never forget. GregH
