Domehead,

Stop by your friendly Wal-Mart and buy a $20 portable electric space heater and a bright orange extension cord so you can run your space heater in the truck overnight.

You gotta have all those electronic marvels when you start it up in the morning. You might not know which direction to turn when you leave the motel parking lot without your in-dash navigation and you wouldn't be able to get an early morning phone call from your agent or broker without your bluetooth.

:-laf:-laf:-laf:-laf I was thinking you were for real Harvey untill I read the next paragraph

You read my sarcasm correctly. I was just giving my friend domehead a little grief over all his fancy bells and whistles.

I can't afford Laramies with leather and built-in NAV. I only buy SLTs and outdated Garmins from SAM's Club.

Im old I still like the old GPS Rand Mcnally look at all the squiggly lines read things that nobody really cares about or never did for that matter. I guess doing that while driving keeps me as dangerous as talking on a cell phone or fiddling with some other electronic junk on the dash.

Me too. I'm even older than you which makes me very resistant to change. New high tech gadgetry bore me. I've been using an aftermarket Garmin in my truck for almost six years and a half million miles. I'm accustomed to them and like them. I can use one while driving and usually stay in my lane.

Maps? Gps? Tec stuff? Just give me a sextant and a compass and a full tank of fuel... ... . 2nd star to the right and steady on that course right on until morning... ... .

I have no idea where your from but if you do that kind of thing in parts of the West you are going to find yourself at the bottom of some ditch. We went by the stars a few times in the A. F. because we lost most of our equipment but it wasn't something I looked forward to and the sky is a mighty big place.

Extremely cold temperatures have been known to flex circuit boards and open fine cracks in micro solder joints and plugs in electronic equipment. This is pretty much common knowledge in the military and I am thinking also in the civilian work areas. Something to think about if it is a critical piece of equipment needed to work immediately.

On a side note, non-living objects don't care 1 bit about wind-chill, wind-chill is an apparent effect on living creatures. You may know this, but you would be surprised how many people think that 40* ambient with a 25* wind-chill will freeze water.

Wind chill does indeed affect any object (living or not) that generates its own heat and is at a higher temperature than ambient. Yes wind chill has no effect on a cold engine, but for a warm engine it does carry heat away more rapidly than if there was no wind in the same way it does for a human.

Yes, but thats not really wind chill, as wind chill is the cooling effect of wind on exposed skin. The wind will "wick" the heat away much quicker than no wind, but by defenition that is not wind chill.

In my work truck, we use panasonic toughbook laptops... anything colder then around 28deg and the computer will not fire up . . it will say "system warming up... please stand by" after 5-10 min and the cab warms up the computer will then turn on.

There is an optional hard drive heater available. Very small heater on the spindle of the hard drive. We use them down to about -10°F as long as you don't need the display.

So with all the heaters I would have to install into my truck to keep all the fancy stuff working most likely I would have to install another set of batteries just for the heaters.

Makes sense AH64ID. . . I wonder if there's a more proper term for 'wind chill' effect on nonliving objects? ;)
