From the owners manual. . (I swear no one reads these things!)

A maximum blend of 5% biodiesel meeting ASTM
specification D-6751 may be used with your Cummins
diesel engine.

A maximum blend of 5% biodiesel, meeting ASTM
specification D-6751 may be used with your Cummins
 diesel engine. Use of biodiesel mixture in excess
of 5% can negatively impact the on-engine fuel filter's
ability to separate water from the fuel, resulting in
high pressure fuel system corrosion or damage.

This vehicle is fully compatible
with biodiesel blends up to 5% biodiesel meeting ASTM specification
D-975.
 
The only Bio Diesel I have ever run in my 06 or 10 was 100% BD. The only dealer/ reseller I have ever gotten BD from is Houston Biodiesel. I never had a problem in the 06' or the 10'. I would say I have run or ran about 40k miles worth in the 06'' and about 15k miles worth in the 10'. I sold the 06' when it had 98k miles on it and the 10' has about 32k miles on it so far. IMO, the manufactures stick to the 5% rule so they can cover there ace from the home brew guys. The stuff HBD sell is made in a HUGE commercial plant not a back yard set up. After 5 years, the QC is as good as anything front the big three station guys.

The problem you run into is that Bio is a very aggressive cleaner. If you have never run it, or not for a long time, it can (will) clog your fuel filter.



Run it consistently and you won't have any problem. Bio actually lubricates very well and since our fuel is now ultra low sulfur its not a bad idea to run Bio. It doesn't take much to gain lubricity benefits, IIRC 3-5%. Older trucks can benefit from adding two stroke oil to the fuel, but that's a kill-shot for the DPF.



Safeway fuel is blended, and I run that periodically.

This is only if your tank is very dirty. The few times I have ran B20 has not effected my filter life at all.
 
From what I have been reading is that biodiesel has a tendency to wash through the cylinders easier and can contribute to more fuel in oil dilution. That is one reason GM went to the 9th injector and make their new diesels B10 compiiant. Probably why Cummins recommends no more than B5 due to the regenerations and dumping fuel back into the cylinders. The older diesels like my 97 would run on anything without worry.

If you run Bio at all, it will clean as it goes and filter maintenance is within norms. I drive for a company that has a fleet of about 70 trucks and when they switched to B20, filters were clogging in short order. I assure you, we don't drive in dusty conditions (PacNWest) and we aren't in the habit of adding dirt to the tank when we fill up. :-laf Diesel fuel happens to leave small deposits over time, and when the Bio enters the system it scrubs the hell out of it and everything gets trapped in the filter. What happened is that we had never run Bio before, and it clogged the filters.



This is a well understood phenomenon for home brewed Bio diesel. Usually your talking about changing out one or two filters, then no further problems. As long as you run Bio on a regular basis I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.



TDickerson is right, and I missed that point in my first post. There is a danger of biodiesel in the crankcase. Too bad Dodge didn't run a 7th injector to mitigate the cylinder wash. I am waiting for the Mads Smarty to come out for the 2011, then I could care less what blend I use.

All Cummins are B20 approved, except the one in our trucks. The Industrial 5. 9's and 6. 7's are B20 approved, but Dodge won't do it.

I agree it's a great solvent, but even the best solvent won't clean up a clean tank...



I didn't run bio for the first 4+ years and never had a filter issue, in fact psi was up 1 psi min with B20 (gotta love lube!!)



Some trucks have filter issues, but not all.
