Bought a new to me 2nd gen(1999),nice truck with 178k but have to let off throttle to get it to shift into second. The truck has a 47re and I just changed the governor pressure solenoid, governor pressure sensor (transducer),o/d lockup solenoid (since I was in there) ,speed sensor and of course new filter/fluid. Took it for a test drive and its still doing the same thing. I dont see a check engine light on but didnt put a scan tool on it either. Any ideas? Thanks! Any help would be appreciated

Did you adjust the bands?

The front band tightening causes 2nd gear engagement.

Best regards,

Now I feel like a turd:-laf. No I didnt do any band adjustments because I was so sure that it was an electrical issue. So you are thinking this is a possibility?

Assuming you didn't find anything strange when you dropped the pan, like something laying in the bottom or metal chunks, then a loose (worn) front band could be the cause of the symptoms.

The good news is the front band can be adjusted without dropping the pan again. The adjustment screw is on the outside of the transmission housing on the driver's side. The rear band adjustment can only be performed after dropping the pan and filter, but it doesn't affect the shift to second gear and could wait until your next fluid change.

Do you have the factory service manual to guide you? If not, do a search here and you'll find step-by-step instructions previously posted.

Found 2 small metal pieces. They were def metal wasnt happy to see them but not overly alarmed either. I could not id where they came from. Like I said, with the exception of 1-2 shift the transmission appears to be functioning properly. I will look for the band adjustment procedure and give that a shot. Thanks John

Found 2 small metal pieces.
Can you tell us more about those metal pieces (description)?

I'm wondering if the front band has broken.

If you can't tighten the front band adjusting screw the required amount during the adjustment procedure, that's an indication the front band has broken OR the front band apply strut has fallen out. If it were the later, you would have found a long slender piece of metal in pan.

Please let us know how things turn out.

Good luck,

John L.

When my 99 did this John led me in the right direction, mine was the pin stop broke where the adjustment screw pushes the band. In turn no 2nd gear.

There were two small metal pieces. The larger being probably just under 1/8 inch at its largest and the smaller maybe about a 1/16 of an inch. Both irregular shapes and part of something else (at least I think). I am going to do this band adjustment later today (easter dinner soon, would rather work on my ctd:)But will def let you know what I find! I am thinking this repair,a borgeson box and a different lift pump and I may consider keeping instead of selling..... this 99 2500 4x4 sport is growing on me!

Ok,just got back to it this afternoon. I backed off the 3/4 jam nut while observing the adjustment screw. It did not back out at all. I then proceeded to turn it in... . felt no resistance at all with only a few threads showing (i was turning it in by hand till this point) It wouldnt have even been flush with the jamnut at this point but recessed had the nut been installed. I then took the adjuster out and inspected it and it looked fine. I reinstalled and i didnt get any resistance till about the point i had it turned in initially. I put torque wrench on it and began to feel some resistance but with about just 1 thread showing i would say I never came close to the 72 inch/lbs that is needed. I am thinking there is some sort of issue here but at a loss as all I found in the pan were the two afore mentioned pieces... ... ... so now what???

I think you've done about all you're going to be able to do. It sounds like you've confirmed something is drfinitely wrong with the front band itself or the attachment points.

Unless you like tearing apart automatic transmissions, it's time to take it to a good shop to at a minimum have them replace the front band, or more likely go ahead and rebuild the whole thing. A heavy-duty transmission ordered from Goerend Bros or DTT is another way to go.
