Starter Not Cranking. TIPM

I got back from a one week holiday. Jumped into the truck, turned the key and got nothing but the grid heater and lights. Starter would not turn over or click. Did some reading here to check all the options before hauling it away on the flat deck. Just so happened there was another thread on a truck not starting.



I checked all the cable connections for good contact. There was one post had some minor corrosion. Tapped the solenoid. Nothing found yet that was a problem. I took the batteries out to get them load tested. They tested strong and still had lots of reserve. I put the batteries back in and cleaned the already clean connections. Tried the key and away it went!



The truck ran fine for the next few days until I dropped the truck off for an oil change at the dealer. When it came time to leave, the starter refused to turn over again. The shop foreman checked the truck out right away and made the call on the TIPM. He ordered it in and when they installed it, away it went. Wallet almost a G lighter and the truck is firing on all six.



Lesson learned... take your truck with you on a holiday and keep it happy. Oo.

It sits on the drivers side fender well behind the headlight. It is the big black fuse box.

DESCRIPTION





The Totally Integrated Power Module (2)(TIPM) is a combination unit that performs the functions of the Power Distribution Center (PDC) and the Front Control Module. The TIPM is a printed circuit board based module that contains fuses, internal relays and a microprocessor that performs the functions previously executed by the FCM. The TIPM (2) is located in the engine compartment, next to the battery (1) and connects directly to the B+ cable (5) via a stud located on top of the unit. The ground connection is via electrical connectors. The TIPM provides the primary means of voltage distribution and protection for the entire vehicle.



The molded plastic TIPM housing includes a base and cover. The TIPM cover is easily opened or removed for service and has a fuse and relay layout map integral to the inside surface of the cover. The TIPM housing base and cover are secured in place via mounting tabs. The mounting tabs secure the TIPM (2) to the battery tray mounting bracket (3).





Note that the tipm must be configured to the vin to be fully functional

Thanks for the info, man this truck is going tobe a bear to figure out. Not like my Y2K. I still don't know how to deal with the girl in my radio that keeps telling me to "Make a U turn". :-laf
