Actually, a similar statement could have been made about the earlier Sick. Ohh engines Fuyd sold between 2002 and 2007. A lot of owners who didn't haul heavy loads in a regular basis still believe their Furds and Sick. Ohh V8s are good trucks. It was when those trucks were placed in service hauling moderate to heavy trailers on a regular basis they all failed.

I worked with a fellow that drives an 05 Ford Diesel dually Six Leaker. Been in the shop multiple times for EGR, oil leaks, oil pump... now hoses blowing off. He's got it stabilized now. He only pulls a small trailer with a dirt track car. He's says he's not a dedicated Ford fan but I kin tell bah the way he talks its in his blood.

Yeah, my brother was like that... "rather push a Ford than drive a Dodge". He finally had all he could stand with his '08 Ford 6. 4L and is now driving a '11 Ram!

I haven't heard too many issues with the 250-350s.

I wonder if it has something to do with the loads you're hauling everyday?

I wouldn't imagine that the engines would be a different design from the others going in the light duty versions.

I dunno... but we are well within the rated capacity for a F-550... that I know for sure. . From what I understand, the only major differences are the turbocharger and the programming. We are de-fueled to 300 hp. rating. . as far as the basic engine internals, AFAIK, they are the same.

Its really too bad, the general consensus is that everybody really likes the trucks, they are light years better than the previous trucks, but, as many of you know, the downtime kills in the service industry.

Wingate,

A couple of years ago, one of our neighbors was building a large lake on his property. The contractor had two CAT dozers and CAT track hoe on the job as well as a large JD track hoe. The CAT dealer service trucks that serviced the CAT equipment were medium duty F750 size Fords. I don't know which CAT dealer was servicing the equipment, but the contractor was from Paris, TX and does a lot of work for TXDOT. Could that have been the your CAT dealership?

If it was, why the change to smaller trucks?

Bill

Probably was part of our machine division. They all still use the bigger F750's with little Cats and 9 speeds... (i think) Not sure what they will do moving forward... . maybe International as well?????

We were using the C4500 Chevys in our division, but with DOT laws getting more and more strict, the decision was made to go up to 1 1/2 ton. Chevy had quit selling the 4500-5500 trucks, and we will not drive a competitor powered vehicle so it started coming down to a Ford, Hino, and I think one or two others. ... . not sure... jsut what I heard. .

In the end, we got the Fords... They also have a lower profile when rigged out... which helps on some locations... that was a consideration. . I love the truck... just after these other failures, i'm kinda paranoid that I am hearing things...

Almost as bad as when my blend door kept falling off my Dodge!!. .

Makes me wonder WHY people are that way... ESPECIALLY about a diesel powered pickup... . until this year... NONE OF THE THREE made their own engines!!!. . One of them STILL doesn't make their own transmission. Most everything else on all 3 manufacturers trucks are produced in the same plants in mexico or canada then sold to the farious manufacturers... so why so brand loyal???

I was talking to a guy in my line of work who has over 60 Hino trucks, and he loves them. I don't know the specs, or even if they have 4 or 6 cylinder engines, but he depends on them every day, 7 days a week and will only buy them from now on. I think they have 19,500 GVWR.
I also believe they are rated #1 by JD Power. Just sayin'...

I hate to bring this up, but that's not unexpected since Hino is Toyota's truck and bus division. :-{}

My wife replaced her 2000 Durango with a 2008 Toyota Highlander - it's never had anything other than routine maintenance.

Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Suburu, all provide similar reliability.

Stand by now for the anti-foreign made products crap we're about to read, even though most if not all of those companies build cars in the US of A with American employees.

HINO products

I drove a '92 Hino 16' cabover w/4 cylinder diesel and an Allison transmission until I retired 8-09. That was the most dependable and efficient vehicle I've ever had the pleasure to drive.

The Feds and CARB made us(San Diego City Schools) replace most of the "dirty" fleet with new dpf and egr equipped fuel-gobbling green vehicles. Fuel economy and dependability went into the trashcan. NICE!

Hino does not offer a similiarly configured truck even with all the emission crap or they would have purchased them again. :{

That is as clear an example of the "good things" lib tree huggers accomplish as I've heard. Simply amazing.

I believe in supporting my local dealers/stores/vendors... . but, when I put the wifes' CX9 up against Ford, GM and Chrysler... . guys... the Mazda beats them every time... . I dont say this just because we own one. . I really tried to buy a Ford (Edge) ... but the Mazda beat the Ford/Lincoln

I believe in buying American. . when possible. But I won't pay more for an inferior product for the sake of a nameplate.

It won't surprise me at all if we end up with another Mazda or an Audi when it comes trade-in time... Of course, I'll have to keep my 8 year old, wore out goat... (its got 44K miles hahaha) so she can have the new leather smell again!!

I'm still trying to figure out the mathematical formula used to determine how buring twice the fuel to do the same work with twice the maintenance is actually more efficient!!!!???????

Must be the same governmental formula they are trying to use to rationalize how actually having LESS is somehow BETTER????

The Hino rear axle is an Arvin/Meritor (Rockwell) set-up. Had to order rear axles and a few internals for a Hino wreck job here and had Arvin/Meritor part numbers right on the invoice. Not all of the truck is built from Jap components.

Just did a quick search and look, the front axle is Meritor also. transmission choices are Fuller 6-speed or Allison Auto. Springs are Hendrickson.

Cab and engine are Jap, balance of components are from this side of the big water.

Link to Hino vs. Freightliner M2 comparison here, read the specs down around page 6-7 or so. Kinda' interesting...

Mike,

Thanks for the Hino comparison. As far back as I can remember I've been addicted to brochures and particularly like the comparison tables.

Does Hino produce a Hino/Navistar comparison also?

What optional engine ratings does Hino offer in the MDT line?

I think emissions regulations are tied to mass of "pollutant" emitted per mile driven (or per hour of operation). So it's possible to burn MORE fuel, so long as what's coming out the tailpipe is "cleaner" on a per-mile basis.

There's no credit for burning less fuel, only for emitting less of what the government thinks is "bad".

Of course, this conveniently ignores all the emissions that go into making all that extra fuel.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I've been saying for years that a major goal of the EPA (and DOE?) is to gain enough power to dictate precisely how every energy-consuming device you buy operates.

Its funny how some people wont buy a product because they think its foreign or has metric bolts. Ive been looking into getting a Victory motorcycle, made in the U. S, biggest complaint from Harley riders? It has metric bolts! some people just dont get it...

Dear Wingate:

Ford and Chrysler both bought 10% shares, each. It was an effort to get Cummins out of the red. Part of the agreement was they had to sell the shares back after 10 years, and they did. So, ever since, a lot of myths have flown around. This was a business/investment decision to make $$$ on the resale.

Ford danced with Cummins re: FORD's proposed design modicicaton for their PU trucks, but Cummins refused, holding their good name to their design instead of someone elses. Rumor has it that 20 years ago Ford tried a hostile takeover to prove their point, but fortunately for us, that failed.

Keep in mind that many Mazdas share their platform with Ford models.

Yep... . the Ford Escape and the Mazda Tribute ARE the same vehicle... but whe it comes to the Edge, it has a different powertrain than the CX-9... the Edge has the 3. 5L Ford engine whereas the Mazda has the 3. 7L Mazda engine... Apparently the transmissions are different since the Edges tend to lose the transmisssions at relatively low miles but the Mazdas dont...

I know Ford and Mazda are married up on some stuff... . From what little I know about the Ford "Sync" system, it can't be much different from Mazdas voice recognition system stuff...
