I will stick with the cummins!!!!!!!

Tell him when the starting fluid trick doesn't work anymore he will have to put a pony motor on it like the old Cat graders and dozers had. :-laf

Spin it over and make combustion heat that way... ... :-laf

Mike. :)

Mike, That was a gas engine and he might get confused and put diesel in the gas engine and gas in the diesel engine.

He really should install an ether injection kit so he could give it a shot from the cab in stealth mode. :-laf

This used to be an attachment from Caterpillar with their pre 1980 engines. I know I had to design the mounting and rout the lines for this attachment on Forest Products.

Yep, that attachment was available from the factory on I-H construction equipment other equipment with direct injection Perkins diesel engines. The big difference was that the ether injection attachment only injected a metered amount of ether into the intake manifold, unlike like a novice operator spraying ether at the air cleaner intake.

I can remember when the 806 Diesel IH farm tractors had a either injection. The control button was mounted on the steering column & every once in awhile the farmer would hit his knee on the button & oops a new head or engine was in his future. Later tractors came from the factory with an empty can & a safety warning lable.

Was in a truck stop in WY cold as hell I fired up and was letting it catch its wind. The guy next to me jumped out and pulled a little cork out of his air cleaner tube and had to empty half a can of sure start (either) and was getting back in to fire off. I asked him to wait because I was sure he was going to grenade his motor. He hit the button and when it came to life it was wide open for what seemed like an eternity. He got out litt a cigarette and said the key was not to lite the cigarette first it burns the either off and laughed

Ether is no problem, as long as you dont use to much AND in the proper application!!!!! We had a mobile crane with a Cummins(no grid heater) engine. It was a cold morning and we were doing equipment inspections. The operator was trying to start the crane and overloaded the motor with the ether. I told him to stop or he would lock up the motor. He listened and we waited about 30 minutes and tried it again and it fired right off. It works, and I would use it if I eliminate the grid heater on "New Ugly". But thats another project and not on the priority list, at the moment!

If the guy with the duramax has to use ether to start his rig, I'd wager he has other issues that are just waiting to bite him. GregH

I think it was either the Lister or Leyland diesels, or may have been both, the cold starting routine was turn the ignition switch to the glow plug position for a about 30 seconds, turn the switch to the start position, and the starter would spin the engine. Once the engine was spinning, hit the ether injection button. With the engine spinning, the ether was sucked past the red hot manifold glow plug, igniting it instantly, and the flame was sucked into the cylinders to provide the necessary heat for it to start. I remember I could hear a poof and the engine would start. :D

Bill, way off the subject, but Mt. Pleasant, TX brings back memories. Graduated from Gilmer a long time ago. Oh, those tall pines of East Texas stay in my mind.

Or he could fix it once - put a Cummins in it... or the factory Duramax. I have not heard to many complaints about them as long as they stay all factory. If he wants to play, he needs a medium duty motor, not a light duty.
