Many of you were interested and commented on my post awhile back when my parts pick-up was totaled, the tanker almost flipped out back and a night tech backed my big delivery truck into a brand new Nissan hanging off the back of a car carrier within a 24 hour period.

With that being said I have gotta' share todays carnage that we believe is a first time event here at FOM.

Damaged THREE vehicles by moving one of them four feet... ... ... .

Here we go...

First truck...

Asplundh Tree Trimmer

Now picture this Fuso parked sideways in front of the White Western Star with the front of the Fuso towards the Asplundh truck in the picture above... it would be tucked in beside of the loader.

OK, now the tech comes out to move the Fuso approaching it from the left rear, opens door and jumps in to pull it ahead about 4 feet to let the Western Star out of it's spot.

Does not see the overhanging boom on the Asplundh truck..... :-{}

Fuso body hits boom.

Pressure of impact blows the bearing out of the swing gearbox on the Asplundh unit.

Boom swings freely around, over the top of the FL70 toyhauler chassis and smacks a Century Class in the windshield two spots over.

We think it is some kind of record... ... ... . :-laf

Mike. :)

No, I'm not calling the insurance company on this one, making the service manager do it!!!!!

Mike;

you need a new business venture to go into. Like--TOYS ARE US,---OR---Park you trucks 50' apart from each other.

In all seriousness the Asplundh truck should have been backed into it's spot.

I am used to booms and the dangers of, had a customer put 15' of delimber boom right through an overhead door one day because he wasn't looking up while pulling ahead.

As some have mentioned before there is so much activity here that this stuff just seems to happen and I have had to relax about it a little or simply stroke out for no good reason.

Posting it here and the comments generated seem to help me put it in a different light... :-laf

Mike. :)

This just goes to prove a point,--That animal don't look up, And this must include HUMANS.

mike, better days are a comin, have a good day!!

mike, I hear your pain, but all you can do is laugh. I wrench for the local DPW and honestly the best fiction writer in the world could not come up with some of the situations our city departments come up with, including all the snow plow drivers. This winter we had a snow blower tractor unmanned go through an over head door. From what i hear, the door surrounded it like a parachute and went with the tractor leaving nothing but a clean 14x14 foot hole in the wall. Yes i said snow blower so it was 1 degree outside. the operator walked towards the tech to explain his issue. the machine was running and the next thing they heard was a back up alarm. seconds later, both the tractor and door had disappeared around the building.

Mike, glad that you can laugh about it and thanks for sharing the laughs.
Now the question is, why does slapstick misfortune like this tend to make us laugh ??

Glad nobody was hurt.
Being able to joke about things like this is a good thing. Other than everyone thinking youre crazy that is... . :-laf

Being able to cause carnage like that at slow speeds is a gift. :-laf

Wait, the boom looks taller than the damaged spot on the FL. Is it just an illusion, or did the boom droop when it swung over?

And whoever owns that toyhauler should go play the lottery. And fast.

WOW! After being retired from heavy truck sales and service business for 18 years as of the first of June, I see that it hasn't changed. :D Thanks Mike, for reminding me what I'm missing...

Hey Mike,

Thanks for posting these :-laf:-laf:-laf

Glad you are able to laugh instead of having a stroke. This thread alone is reason enough for renewing my TDR subscription:-laf

Good luck at work and have a nice weekend!

When a significant accident occurs, the US Navy often suspends operations for 24 hours and conducts safety awareness training. Reminding all hands of the dangers inherent in their working environment often helps get people to stop, look, think, and listen before doing something.

Reminds me of the time a few years back in our shop.

An old friend was using a spare bay to do some electrical work on the Jake in his tractor. He was standing outside truck with door open making adjustments most of the morning. At some point his team driver stopped by to get something out of truck. She must have put transmission in gear getting into or out of bunk. She left , and he carried on.

Next time he reached up to start engine, you guessed it, truck started on first crank and drove through the 14 foot door(that we had JUST recently replaced because old one was worn out). He was still hanging onto steering wheel, with feet draggin on ground when truck exited the the bay. No one was hurt, Thank God, but there was some hurt pride and a lot of money spent , for that little oversight.

Yes, good eye!!!

The techs had already put down the outriggers to level the truck before swinging the boom back into place.

I was on the dead run with the camera trying to catch what I could before they put the boom back in it's cradle.

Mike. :)

Mike, thanks for the pics. It's nice to see I'm not the only one who drives thru, into, and over things I shouldn't. :-laf

I'll have to get on more often, I needed a laugh that week. ;)
