Alternator bearing, idler pulley, I'd say it sounds like some component related to the fan belt, maybe the belt itself. Pull the belt and give everything a spin.

I agree with JJPage, sounds like something driven by your belt, turn on the AC and see if it the sound changes, might be just the idler pully.

i had a similar noise in my 95 gasser ram I had. It was the belt slipping slightly on the fan hub. try spraying a little soap and water just on the inside of the belt and see if the noise dissipates. if it doesn't, then try spraying alittle on the outside of the belt. If you get any results with that, then just change out the belt. For some strange reason I had better results with the cheapest belt I could buy locally. The squeel seemed to return sooner with the more expensive belts. Havent had the problem on the cummins though. Hope this helps. T-bird

No on the antifreeze... but unless I'm nuts, it does it more/louder in the desert (Ca and Az), than in humid areas like the midwest.

nope your not nuts. As I remember mine made more noise on certain days and the weather seemed to be a factor. Couldn't quite figure it out either at the time, but changing the belt fixed it right up. try changing the belt and let me know if it disapears.

The pulley on the belt tensioner is going south. Do yourself a favor and replace it at the same time as the belt or you will just be back wondering what else is wrong in the future. ;)

When you have the belt off check the idler pulley and the fan support bearing both for noise and smoothness. Both of those will cause a multitude of noises that have people chaning injectors, alternator, etc.

yes. I agree, you should check all the bearings and tensioner for any roughness and play wwhen you remove the belt, as they also could give you trouble, especially if one of them is not running true. I checked all mine and could not find anything astray. I even went so far as to change out the complete tensioner assembly at a high cost and mine still squeeled like a pig until I just changed out the belt. one shop told me to check the pully splines on the alternator for wear. He said he had to change the odd one because the splines wore down and started to bottom out on the belt groves cause squeeling. I finally narrowed my noise down to the back side of the belt squeeling on the fan hub. i changed the water pump a few years before and it was still good (5. 9 gas). I changed the belt and all was well.
