My 06 2500 has been blowing quite a bit of white smoke and idling rough on startup. It does clear out and doesnt seem to have any loss of power while driving. I do notice a louder pinging/knocking every 5 seconds or so on idle. Is this injector? Tried injector cleaner. Can one injector be bad and replaced or do all?

Replacing 1 is just a waste of time in Most cases, Injector cleaner is another waste of Money and Time. . New Injectors are hard to come by,Bosch is fed up with all the negligent rebuilding that has been occurring over the last fews years and is NOW putting a stop to this activity. Companies have been ripping off owners and Bosch for years it time to put a stop to this criminal activity.

Welcome to TDR. If you search old threads in the Gen III engine section you will find hundeds of posts on the subject of possible injector issues?

Yes, you can purchase one injector but all six probably have the same number of miles of service on them and have been subjected to the same duty cycle, fuel, etc.

You will find it helpful to disclose your odometer reading when asking questions like this.

I am no mechanic or skilled troubleshooter but I would first install a replacement FCA (fuel control actuator) because it can produce similar symptoms, is a known high failure rate item, and is cheap (approximately $150) from a Cummins dealer. It can be installed in ten minutes.

If a FCA doesn't cure the problem my advice would be to purchase a "six pack" (set of six in a carton) new remanufactured injectors from a Cummins dealer and replace all six.

Others will recommend their own favorite injector service.

I trust Cummins dealers because they offer a warranty you can count on and have been in business for a long time. Their business depends on many other parts and services and they don't sell modified or performance products.

I have an early 04 2500 with a Banks ottominder, intake and monster exhaust. Truck runs and works good. I see alot of people run smartys or jr. s, seams not many run banks systems. Does any body know why or any imput?

Ducker,

Welcome to TDR.

It would be better to start a new thread with your question rather than steal this original poster's thread with a question on an entirely different subject.

You would be more likely to have TDR members see and reply to your post if posted in a new thread with a new title.

With the white smoke and occasional knock, I would lean towards an injector(s) being the problem, whether a solenoid, tip, body, or internal failure, this is not good. I would never just replace or repair one injector, alot of folks have and been successful... I would do all six.

You can take Harvey's advice and purchase an FCA from Cummins, he is right, they do fail, and for around $110. 00 a spare is good insurance if it turns out not to be the problem. The Cummins part #4932457 / Actuator ETR Fuel Control, is the part you want.

Good Luck, Welcome to TDR.

I just laid down $3400 and change in injectors. I'm 2k from home traveling in our fifth wheel.

Five days back, my truck was idling rough for the first start of the day, the would be fine for the remainder of the day.

This occurred for three days then ran fine without any idle problems. On day five, I cranked the engine over and immediately started blowing white smoke and was obviously not operating smoothly on six cylinders.

I wanted to replace the injectors before our trip but didn't. As of today, I had to settle for re-man injectors and labor cost. I could have done the job myself and installed NEW Bosch injectors from Dynomite.

I've learned another lesson the hard way.

Am I missing something? I have a 12-valve, and white smoke on startup, which clears up and runs well, but then returns the next day indicates air in the lines, somewhere between the lift pump and the injector, most likely in the rubber lines.
