I've got 132k on my stock 48re, at one time I had 90hp injectors in addition to whats listed. I tow semi regularly heavy (14k). Last fluid change at 125k, just started to find clutch material in oil.

The problem is stories like that are the exception not the norm. For every one that reports good luck with programmersm big tires, etc, there are 10 more with solid proof its not common.

Law of averages says it will bite, but, I would get the Smarty anyway and just NOT reduce the TM while using the lower power settings for extended use. You can use the Smarty while driving wisely with good luck. Just don't expect to do 15 psi boosted launches very long before something gives up. :-laf

I disagree. I think the reason why there are "10 times more with solid proof", is only because you dont see people starting threads saying "yaaaa hooo im at 100K on my stock trans" but the minute anyone has any problem, a thread is started.

Amongst all my friends with 48re's, only 2 of them had to replaces trans' with just a smarty, and they beat the crap outta their trucks. Anyone who has treated them with some common sense is still running them.

I have parts sitting awaiting the day for mine to go. But Im going to drive it until it does.

Of course you won't hear about the success stories, but, still the ratio of people with problems to those without is still way higher. More like 1 in 40 from the posters on the forums.

Like anything else, its not a given problems are going to show immediately but they are there.

While the instances of problems is higher if you thrash the truck, problems will still occur way more non-stock than stock EVEN with sensible use. There is a very good reason ATS, DTT, Suncoast, Garmons, and 100 other shops are building these units and can't keep up. When 90% of the total ownership probably doesn't have a clue about programmers, boxes, and such and the demand is there, well, the answer is in the numbers.

You can keep thinking your trans is in good shape but I guarantee if you have been running extra power and big tires and no trans mods it is NOT just fine. You would be very surprised just how long these units will run when they are really past the point of good shape. Your direct clutches are likely worn well beyond spec, probably the forwards and the front band also. Thats the weak point.

Its likely 1 throttle blip at the wrong time from no more go and odds are it WILL happen at an inopportune time. :-laf
