Smoking during one's break is hardly anyone's business.

Now, if they were smoking pot or crack, that would be different, but the article just said "smoking" so I now have to question whether they were drinking alcohol or milk or soda pop.

It was a very poorly reported article at any rate.

A statement from Chrysler's VP of Manufacturing regarding this incident:

"I just want to say I am both hurt and angered over what your cameras captured. Again, we have Chrysler workers in a compromised position, without regard for the impact of their actions, the reputation of their coworkers, the plant, of the company, not to mention their own reputation and that of their families. As a company, in the last two years we've come too far and made way too much progress to let the bad actions of a few put a shadow on the rest of the employees. And to be clear, we've got a code of conduct at Chrysler and some of the activities that we saw in your video are clearly outside of the code of conduct and unacceptable. The employees that we identify, as soon as we understand who they are, will be suspended indefinitely without pay and anybody else involved will be dealt with swiftly. It's very frustrating to us, we take it very seriously. We have a lot of very committed folks at Chrysler. We are very proud of our team. We have some folks who apparently do not want to be part of that team. "

Yeah, I'm sure they were just puffing Marlboros...

Again, where is it identified what they were smoking & drinking? It isn't. This is inuendo, not evidence. If they want evidence, or positive results, they would simply have urine and breath tests. I have to do those, so why not them? Then there is the matter of "leadership by example"...

Meaning, I also wonder if the VP's office might include a wet bar. . ? And how many Chrysler executives could pass a drug & alcohol screen? Judging from my own truck's serious design problems and Chrysler's financial mishandling, probably very few.

I agree, if it were just smoking cigarettes, it's not really anyone's business. The story wasn't complete, but the video was way more in depth and showing alcohol and looked like pot, :-laf

Those glass pipes being used are made specifically to smoke drugs with and are considered ''drug paraphenalia" and are infact illegal in many states to have on ones person. Drug residue on those pipes are enough to convict but is actually not needed. However, as noted above; "circumstantial evidence" will win out. We dont know exactly what they were smoking I guess. The labeled beer is another story. Also; You can't or should not attempt to rationalize this type behavior by equating the CEO having a 'wet bar' in his office. This is just ridiculous bad behavior that is being tolerated and protected by the unions. Sad indeed to have such a good job with exceptional pay and benefits and then jeopardize it all with this crap. Amazingly stupid. My truck was made in Mexico. Wonder if Fox will go there next??

Lighten up man thats just the way the world is now adays.

Or

lite'm up man, dis da way we do'sit now.

Call the cops and hang them, there are plenty of good people wanting a good job, and are clean.

You should be a politician

You can't or should not attempt to rationalize this type behavior by equating the CEO having a 'wet bar' in his office. /QUOTE]

It is quite clear if you do not believe in leadership by example, or in clear-cut company policies that apply equally to ALL, that it is you doing the rationalizing. I simply made a point you have no good answer for. Slam dunk.

SRATH. Ok. You have a point I guess. You and I are actually allies on many points so don't get your shorts in a knot. I follow a lot of your comments and I agree with most of them. BUT. . there is no excuse for this type behavior as exposed on that video. When an executive entertains other executive levels in his office there is no risk or safety compromise as there would obviously be on a production line with mechanical means of high risk injury. There is no comparison and your analogy is off base. THAT was my point. I am not attempting to rationalize anything. Sorry I didn't articulate it better but I was not ready or expecting your 'slam dunk' reply.

As for me not believing in "leading by example" I have a 26 year Blended Military Career covering enlisted and commissioned officer levels both active and reserve... that I am perfectly proud of and have indeed 'led by example'. As a "Mustang" officer who started out as an enlisted and worked my way up through all the ranks, I understand clearly what being a "role model" means. When you are a field grade officer... . the buck stops with you ALL the time. I am now retired and still enjoy my troops company anytime and with good memories too. I do not know if you have any military experience but if you do then you will understand where I am coming from. Rest easy my friend. I like your latin phrase signature also. Common sense to me.

You're absolutely correct about that behavior being unacceptable, sngleshot. I have long resented the fact that I have to submit to drug & alcohol testing but those "in charge" and those who pass the laws do not. That's as wrong as wrong can be and I have zero respect for it. That's my only point.

I have worked for people in management with serious drug & alcohol problems and the decisions they make directly affect my own safety. If blue collar workers saw high level management submitting to the same random testing with the same consequences for failing such a test, they would probably respect the seriousness of the anti-drug & alcohol policy much more and have more respect for management and policies in general.

That and I don't trust the media. They aren't above staging & creating "news".

HAH! Poor rupert. Good one!
SR; once again, you and I agree. Media is not to be trusted, not even FOX although they seem to be the best out of the group... BUT any organization that would hire Geraldo dosn't get my nod for good management. Dennis Miller is funny but getting old like Glenn B. It was time for him to move on. I could go on and on but no need. The American People are on their own anymore for information that is to be trusted. SAd indeed.

The Head Knob of Fox (Fake?) (Farce?) (Fallacious?) and a whole lot of expressions beginning with an F, so its claimed, News, Murdoch will be facing the British House of Commons for the transgressions of his News Empire. He pulled the plug of a 186 year old newspaper News of the World (sex tabloid) overnight caught in the scandal, resignations, all that kind of stuff. Hopefully Fox News will give the whole details of this 'vexing bother' (got that from a novel years ago) trouble. Top men at Scotland Yard couldn't take the heat so resigned. FBI also interested, adding mystery to misery.

SRath, years ago in the Eastern USA I worked for a construction company and we were doing a job at a cement plant. We happened to be working overtime and went to the cement company's canteen for sandwiches and coffee, after eating and drinking our coffee a glass of beer was put for us, when the second came I said to my workmate perhaps we had better go back to work, he then said, "Who do think is buying the beer?". It was the foreman. Because we were on overtime the food and drinks were free. (Is that the way to run a responsible company?) The plant and contractor were making money. Times and things do change.

There is something to be said for some occassional good will and comaraderie between management and workers, isn't there? It breeds mutual respect and even trust and responsibility.

The chasm has widened over the years and I cannot help but wonder how much money has been lost to the "us against them" mentality so pervasive on both sides? The intrusion of government and political correctness has exacerbated the problem.

My Grandad once told me "There is no such thing as a bad job if you have a good boss. " and that old school axiom still holds true in a few companies and probably works both ways. But today, the standard new-school management policy is more often "The beatings will continue until moral improves. "

My own original motivational poster says "Around here, 'Going the Extra Mile' just means you missed your exit. "

Scott, I totally agree. It used to be when you took a pay check you "Rode for the Brand" however loyalty seems one sided now days.

I recently quit a 13 year job for this very reason. As the senior Sgt. out of nine, in a 400 bed Detention Center, working with inmates was a piece of cake, working with command staff was impossible. I gave back 1000 hours of sick time when I left, I always figured I was hired because I was needed. If I was absent the job couldn't get done, so rain or shine, sick or healthy I was at work. Didn't matter in the long run.
