Car Dolly Question

Got back home yesterday from a Western swing trip through Washington Idaho,Montana,Wyoming , Oregon and Colorado. The new trailer worked great, no issues and my 04 Dodge was stellar towing it. Went up 13 miles of 10 percent grade in Wyoming, 100degree heat. Had to go to 2nd gear in the hairpins, but she towed it. . The 2nd photo has the road we will travell in the backround. YIKES it looks steep!!!!

You must have traveled on US 14 Alternate though Wyoming... one of several ultimate test highways for a tow vehicle. :D

That is the highway One of my favorite places on earth. We went back about 12 miles on gravel to a spot at 9600 feet we park the rig. 14A is a killer approach from Lovell Wy. The steepest sections are 13%, although they are short. I went to 2nd gear both for the 15mph hairpins and +EGTs kept getting higher than I liked.

We spent 7 weeks in the new Platinum-Outlaw trailer, extreamly pleased with the quality of the interior and trailer. This is MY version of what a "Toy Hauler" should be. It is Damn Tough and light... ..... Happy Campers are we :)

Good looking rig, beautiful countryside view, nice to see TWO hands on the wheel and Co-Pilot taking pic's.

13% grade, up 13' for each 100' forward, WOW!

I have been across 14A two times via automobile and each time there was a certain pucker factor involved. I hope to drag my travel trailer through the area some day.

Where exactly did you camp? I'm always looking for spots off the beaten path.

Love your dog - I've got a border collie too!

Gonzo... Your "Platinum - Outlaw" trailer, in the pictures you posted, I can't see any vent doors for the Horses ??

Could it be your NOT hauling Horses ?? Is the Rear section used to haul Toy's ?? and the Horse stalls are deleted.

I think you have a really nice Trailer... I'm impressed. . !!!!

NO HORSES ALLOWED. I would stick a screwdriver in my ear before I would sit one one of those things.

I do artistic blacksmithing and sell at art shows. My product is stored in the rear half of the trailer along with my little CanAm Outlander Max Xt. Gotta have a way to get around. :) I am travelling about 140-150 nights a year, I have seen some of my friends try to use a regular "Toy Hauler" that much and generally they don't last more than 3 years. I have been talking to cowboys at rodeos and was convinced that they use their trailers MUCH harder than anybody out on the highways. . They said that there was 5 Horse trailer manufacturers that make top of the line strong-light trailers. Platinum being one of them. Platinum had not done a cargo trailer before (just horse and livestock trailers) and I talked them into making one for me. . It may not be a "fluffy" pretty as some of the women friendly trailers, but it is meant to last a long time. We did not get entertainment in it ( I read and use the laptop) or a slide. My experence with comercial use of a slide in a trailer is NOT GOOD. As a weekinder yes slides are awsome. use it near 1/2 of the year and they are not going to last. IMHO

Sounds like a great trip!

What Garrett Charger do you have?

I have a custom 14cm Garrett S300 It has been one of the best additions I have made to this truck. The only downside is, when I am above 6,000' it spools a bit slow at low rpms. I have to bring the RPMS up just a bit higher to kill the smoke. Lower elevations it works great. Twins would be ideal, I just have to figure how to pay for them. .

As you can see I am a little rough on my stuff, Pitching Collies into snowmelt streams. and driving NICE equipment WAY back on sketchy roads. .

what was your avg. mpg?????

On this trip we were about 12. 5MPG. GCVW is at 24,000# and most of the travel in Montana, and Wyoming was at 75+mph. This is about 1. 5 better than I got with the truck camper weighing about 4,000# less... Oo.

I was travelling in the 65-67MPH range with the camper. Now at 75 common sense would say that MPG would go down. The wind resistance on truck campers is HIGH

Is it a BB turbo? Do you know the specs on it?

Gypsy (the Border Collie) actually really likes the water. She runs in front of the quad on sections that are rough and gets quite dusty. A toss in the stream and than a 35mph "blow dry" and she is good to go back into the new coach. .

Yep, my brother's Border Collie loves the water too. She is a cow dog and very good at her job. She gets hot working and takes regular dips in the cow's water trough and/or nearby pond, but on her terms. However, she doesn't like a toss into the water by either of us.
