x2 what harvey said. what caused it to fail, does the 09 also have the dmf

yes dmf,

the pilot bearing fell apart causing clutch failure at almost 85 K(to bad cause clutch and pressure plate looked like new). . put sb smf ofe w/hydro on and it never shifted right after that made some noise like it did when i heard the pilot go on the oem. not sure what is going on, going to pull it out again monday i hope and see what is going on. I also have exsesive low end growl. I know that the g56 is somewhat noisy but this does not sound healthy.

I tow heavey a lot heviest is toy hauler loaded is probly 18k

Kent,

Neither the DMF or G-56 will stand up well with constant heavy towing or with your 18k toy box.

A SBC solid flywheel and clutch will solve the DMF issue but then you're likely to experience G-56 problems. Did you read Joe Donnelly's article in the recent TDR magazine issue?

no what issue is it?

I know that if you buy a reman g56 from dodge it comes with a 100k warentee but they are only listed up to 05 then they only sell new ones w/12k warrentee

harvey and i disagree on this also. the dmf will ruin the g56 just like it did yours. we caught ours before damage was done on any of them except the front seal. the southbend kit has a real pilot bearing in it and you will never have a problem again. the g56 must have one quart over full to cool and lube the front bearing. use penzoil syncromesh and get trans-cools from genosgarage.com they hold one quart bringing the total to two gallons. also wrap the exhaust by the g56 we tow way heavier than you or harvey and most of our g56's have over 100,000 miles on them with our 710 hoes we gross 44,000 lbs. each of our trucks is set up at between 425 and 450 hp and about 900 ft lbs torque. one point i should mention you may not have a problem, the reason they used a dmf is the design of the g56 transfers engine noise mor than any transmission to date. with the new solid flywheel you now can hear it very loud. you can cut it down about half by changing the harmonic balancer to a fluidamper. in my opinion the g56 is the best one built to date. we expect them to last over 1,000,000 miles without going into them. our first dmf failed at 35,000 miles after a couple more failures we just changed the others before failure. in the dmf even if the pilot bushing is ok it causes the front seal and bearing problems. in issue 73 page 44 talks some about the fluidamper

The last issue of TDR magazine. I don't remember what issue number it was. Joe wrote a lot about the transmission and his visit and talk with Standard Transmission in Fort Worth.

CKelley,

I don't have any experience with high mileage G-56s. My comments about service life were based on Joe Donnelly's opinions written in the latest issue of TDR. I'm surprised you are getting away with pulling those weights after what I read in the TDR article on G-56.

Harvey, Ckelley,

Long life probably due as much to operator experience as in any application. My stock G56 and DMF has 92K, no issues whatsoever. Occasional towing of about 15K and thats it. Treat her right and she'll do the same, IMHO.
