48RE '03 into a '04.5

Does anyone know if the 48RE from 2003 HO will work in a 2004. 5 HO?

I have a 48RE from my '03 that was totaled with only 30k on the trans. and am trying to decide whether I should keep it or not for my '04. 5 HO w/140k miles on the original 48RE.

Anything need to be changed if it'll work or is it a straight R and R?

Anyone done this?

All depends if it'll work or not, can't get a solid answer from Dodge. Go figure!

Swaps like that one with components influenced or controlled by ECM and/or PCM are pretty risky.

I don't know but if I had to guess I would guess no. I believe the 'MY03 had a very small ECM with limited capacity/capability but each year for the next several MYs the computer was expanded and took on more "duties. " I'm guessing that the 48RE became a little more sophisticated and was influenced more by computers. I may be wrong.

Unless someone's parts manual or a salvage yard's computer tells you the 48REs from those two different MYs are directly exchangeable I would not count on it and certainly would not go to the expense and trouble to swap the '03 unit into an '04. 5 truck. The automatic may not be capable of reading and following the directions issued by the ECM/PCM.

Kinda what I was thinking from what I've been able to find (which isn't much).

Just wanted to find something out so I could decide to keep the '03 trans so that when (if) my '04. 5 trans. takes a dive.

The '03 was completely rebuilt by Dodge with all new internals and converter so I'd kinda hate to sell a trans that I could use and already have.

Call a rebuilder such as Jasper. They will be able to tell you the year/serial breaks as to what fits what.

Without digging deeper my first reaction is yes. At worst you might have to keep the newer valve body. The internals of the transmission have not changed that much until the very late 48's.

Yes, it will fit with no issues. The 48RE transmission for 04 thru 07 will interchange in all the years. Any trans controls are specific to the truck, not the transmission.

Yep, no difference and they will bolt directly in. A 48RE is a 48RE as long as the configuration is the same, ie 4x4 to 4x4 and 2x4 to 2x4.

Ah , but there is a difference , the 03 and 04s used a tv cable and the 4. 5 and newer use a tv controller motor. however there are case adapters to use the older cases with the newer controllers, check P. A. T. C transmissions. I believe they have them.

No it will not fit. The 2003and 2004 used the 47re while the 2004 1/2 -2007 used the 48re. The computer is not compatible between these years.

The 47 was used only on early '03's with the 250 HP engine. Some were equipped with 48's, even the 250 HP engine when the supply of 47's was used up. The 48 and the 305HP engine were early '03 options, starting with January '03 production. The two will physically interchange, but some of their internals are different. The 47/250HP engine also had the same TC lockup strategy as the 2nd generation trucks.

Ok, 1 more time it is NOT a 47re.

I had a C code '03 (HO) it was totaled had a 48re in it.

I now have a C code '04. 5 (HO) with a 48re.

Same trans, 48re, different years.

The question is will the 48re from the '03 work in the '04. 5 when (not if) it goes South.

I know it will "fit" will it "talk" to the truck ECU and function correctly?

There is NO DIFFERENCE in the electronics or the TV actuator between 03 and 04. 5 trucks. The TTVA did not start until 05 and all it does is sit on the TV actuator just like the lever did in earlier trucks. The differences in a 48RE from 03 to 07 are all internal.

I did some searching and found this thread so imma revive it. I hope cerberusiam or someone else who knows can chime in here just to verify.



My buddy has an 05 with a built goerend and he is trading the truck in. I have an 04. 5 with a stocker. His obviously is the TV motor trans, my 04. 5 is the TV lever cable.



I think my question was answered above but to verify, I can pull the tv lever assy off mine, and put that assy in his tv motor trans and vice versa and swap them between trucks no problem?



Will there be any issue with the fact that mine has OD off and his has tow/haul or is that a setting in my ECM that does it's thing regardless of trans? Thanks for any input.

That is correct, swap the TV lever over to the 05 trans and you are good to go. As long as they are both 4x4 or 2x4 transmisisons that is. The only difference between 2x4 and 4x4 is the output shaft and OD housing.



The OD controls are all in the ECU, nothing on the transmissions is any different.
